Hi people, here is my next poll :
I started playing cash game recently (0.02/0.04$, 6 players, NL Holdem, max 2$ buy in). It's going quite good for now and adding the rakeback, its relatively safe for me now. Nevertheless, i'm now experiencing the hell of variance with a big negative swing of 7-8 buyins (not in one time of course, but during the last 3 sessions, something like 1000-1500 hands). I can tell u it was a negative swing and not me doing the fish since i had a lot of 70%, 85% and KK/AA's cracked. The last session was a lil bit better with a little profit. I hope it will start running better now.
So here is my question : what was your biggest swing (try to formulate this in Buy-ins if possible, considering you play always at the same limit.) playing No Limit Holdem Ring games. So for me, since i only have 4800 cash game hands for now, its this 7-8 buy ins swing (and its maybe not yet finished ! :S ).
I know the poll is biased since ppl will tell their biggest swing for 10 players ring games and others for 6 plyrs ring games, but the goal is not to make a serious statistic study, just to have an idea ^^
My largest single session downswing has been about 5 buyins. It could have been worse except that I will stop and get off the tables before the losses become too large.

Four days ago 1.5k in a serious monkey tilt session which saw me climb in stakes to try to offset losses. Almost didn't sleep that night. The next day I thought about things, sat back down and now four days later I have won it back. Shoulda stopped earlier like psycokiller says to do.

I mostly play no limit or pot limt omaha at stakes that my bankroll can't afford, one time I lost nearly $750 in one day playing above my bankroll would let me.

Sheesh, listen to all you high rollers out there. My biggest downswing is only a measly $50 or so (which is way off of $4K, man I wish I had your roll Jess). If I recall that down swing was on Cake Poker playing $0.25/$0.50 (woo).

I'd have to say my biggest downswing was around 30ish buyins, but that was at Super Turbos on Full Tilt, and those probably have some of the sickest variance you'll ever see. 300 starting stack, 3 minute blinds starting at 10/20. Basically shove/fold until the last hand. Can be soul crushing and hard to deal with, but swings like that are pretty standard.

My roll is/was probably nothing like you imagine. Biggest I ever had it (around Sept '11) was about $10K
I just like to live dangerously.. I pretty well busted out during Oct.. I managed to withdraw around $4k from Sep-Oct, then busted through most of the rest being an idiot.. I withdrew my final $1k end of October and took a break.

i have experienced quite a few large downswings in my short poker career, they all resulted in me losing the whole bankroll in bb that probably was something like 100-200 bb , but in one session- i know i am total looser, but hey sh.t happens since i am a "pro" i believe i can allow these downswings easily

This poll comes in the perfect time, unfortunately for me: I just had my biggest negative swing in cash game (NL holdem) this Sunday. In a rare moment of my life, I had a complete afternoon (about six hours) to dedicate myself entirely to poker, so I decide to enter the room where I am playing now and opened two ring tables and registered for a tourney. Things started equilibrated but soon I saw my first buy-in going away with a three of a kind against a straight done already all-in with the help of the river (grrr… . From then on, I started playing more hands but I wasn’t able to turn things back on my side again. In conclusion, I ended up blowing seven buy-ins (I know I should have stopped when losing five, by the book rules).

with a strictly bank roll management, it can't happen. you lost but not so extrem. you have a limit what you can play with your money. you have to look what you can play.
for example: you have 100$ and plays nl2, so you have 50 buy ins. normaly you up a limit if you have reached the next step,
for example: you need for nl2 20-30 buy ins, so you need 40$ to 60$. if you want up a limit you take it for the next limit.
for example: nl5 30 buy ins 150$, nl10 for this example is 300$ make it how you play. if you play more tables, you can it make higher, also 30 not 20 buy ins.

Bankroll management. Swings are usual in poker, but not spend 2/3 of your bank in two days!!!! BM is our friend, our lovely friend. Like the one who leave us in house when go drunk.

I go all in with the better hand in certainly 80 percent of all situations and lost the most of them. And this in the last 4 years of a lot of different sites. But the most of all situations are nearly coinflips and so i think the variance is not the best indicator.

That definitely isn't wat I imagined. I was figuring you had at least over 20K in your stack. Do play poker as your main source of income? I imagine you must play pretty high stakes and wouldn't be doing it if you weren't profitable. That is living dangerously though.

Downswing so called nightmare.Once you start losing and thats repeat several days no mater what you play probably is moment to stop playing and think what is the problem 1.Not to go on higher level to return loses if you play with 100$ risk is when you play with more than 4$ and downswing 20$ (linear proportion for every level).Probably no one cant stop playing but good solution is to start playing some 1$ heads up or sit & go and try to be patient and back some loses solutions: 1.sleep 2.go outside spend some time with friends 3.not talk about loses with your friends 4.eat some fruits and take some refreshments 5.Not GO ALL IN AFTER FLOOOOOOP

Ha ha Djtopato, why not "GO ALL IN AFTER FLOOOOOOP" If you've likely got the best hand and you really need to discourage some chaser's there's definitely situations where it's legit. Definitely agree with the first four though, do anything to relax and refresh.
