I think everyone mostly means in a hand where u are in SB or something and are dealt 24 or any hand. utg min raises and 4 callers come along. you are getting huge pot odds now and call but the flop was all red face cards. You act first and just fold to allow others to play the hand without worry about you. As Etna mentioned its sometimes beneficial to give this courtesy. Depending on the player types at the table this can end up being very beneficial.
I once was bb and held 35os. i was ss'd exactly the type of multyway pot came. I nitted up thinking there was noway i could win against so many. Sure enough 3 3's on the flop and 3 people had a pp they all thought was good.
It just occured to me that Etna's great answer, should be effective for getting rid of the short stacks, when you're on the bubble in a qualifier tournament (all prizes being equal).
When you are in a pot against a big stack and a small stack, you can open fold (if you hit nothing), so the other big stack can make the small stack go all-in, without him worrying about me going over the top... Otherwise it might be checked all the way down...

Posted by etna2007: I do that on rare occasions if we are 3 people in the pot etc, and i know i cant take the pot down. Reason is, i want to let them know i dont have anything so they dont have to play scared, i like them to fight for the pot and one of them might bust.
A very valid point, I had never considered this. Thanks

Posted by marqis: Every now and then, I come across someone that folds their hand at the turn or river, while they can just call for free. Why would anyone do that?
It happens too often to be explained simply by mis-clicking, because the software displays a warning message when you do, informing you that you can check instead...
The only reason I can think of is to not give any information, about the range of hands you play...
Drunk player? Idiot player? Strange player? Player who don´t know anything about poker?...
Who knows what ideas are in the mind of some people...

Yeah I also like Etna's take on it. I didn't think of it that way either, but it makes perfect sense. If there's an extra player in it's more likely you're beat so if that extra player tosses you don't have to worry as much about a check raise or what not.

You definitely should never open-fold J high.. You're ahead of a LOT of suited connected speculative holdings that have missed whatever draw they were on..
Basically - if you can beat what ever is on the board - then you should seriously consider a show down..
It's interesting though how many people *DO* incorporate this open-folding into their game; obviously there is some merit to it. Some interesting ideas about it so far..

I agree it is a bit weird, especially now that you have the ability to muck your cards or show if you want to. I personally always just check instead of folding and then just muck my cards if i want to. But i often tend to mix it up also and show consecutive bluffs on purpose, only to follow it up with a gigantic win the next hand
