This kind be good at all for the players especially but it seems that is trendy for all govs to ban online poker...

I would understand that in a perfect world without crimes, frauds, etc to concentrate on other domains too but as long as this are current problems on all countries those kind of problems should be addressed first!

I don't know. We can't really bet on anything over here; it's all lottery type of games. There's no bookmakers, horse races or anything, like in the UK.
I bet (pun intended) that for governments that do allow gambling, it is a huge source of tax revenue...

Woah! going to stop you there.
We have more or less the same situation in Belgium, and there are definitely bookmaker offices in Holland as well. The company "scientific games" runs them. Lots of locations.
And you can bet on horses, football, whatever.

Let's not be naive about this, it is well-known and very clear why Countries are doing this.
Has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with safeguarding it's citizens.

I can't believe I'm about to argue in favor of the government, but, with great trepidation, I will (sort of) concerning this issue... Smile

In fact I pay 60% income tax, and if I buy something with the money that's left after that, there's an additional 19% VAT, and there's various other taxes besides those...

Like I said; unbelievable. However, as much as I dislike being "robbed", I do feel it's important to stay objective.

I had not heard of "scientific games", but it seems they run the dutch lotto, which is just a lottery type game. Betting on sports, horses etc.. is illegal in Holland. Of course it's hardly possible to block every foreign gambling site, so probably lot's of dutch citizens play these. It is illegal though...

So no bookmaker offices anywhere, as far as I know...

Slot machines (aka "gokkasten" Blink are regulated, so they are reduced to the point of being little more than an arcade game:
- Every roll may not cost more than 20 cents
- Maximum loss must be limited to 40 euro/hour
- At least 60% of money going in, must be paid out
- The jackpot may not exceed 200 times the cost of one roll
- The time between 2 rolls must be at least 3.5 seconds
- Limited availability (no more than 2 machines/cafe, and not available in snack bars/restaurants etc...)

So no Vegas-type million dollar jackpots I'm afraid...

Casino's: There's exactly one licenced casino; "Holland Casino's" (in various cities). These are also regulated:
- No anonymous access. Every player is monitored for addictive behavior. Counselling is provided when a problem is detected, sometimes players are banned for gambling addiction.

Admittedly, I just saw a documentary about this policy, and it seems that Holland casinos does almost nothing to stop addicts; hardly anyone gets banned for addiction, yet there are quite a few people in financial ruin, because of gambling there...

Also I asked LadBrokes:

Gavin: Welcome to Ladbrokes Live Chat. How may I help you?
you: Is gambling available for dutch customers?
you: E.g. Betting on football matches, casino games etc...
Gavin: For individuals resident in Holland - we accept only Poker and Casino play, horse racing and greyhound racing bets, and not lotto, or other games or sports bets.
you: Casino too?
Gavin: Yes you can play Casino.
you: Ok, thank you.
Gavin: You're welcome.

Conclusion: It seems unlikely that dutch government policy concerning gambling, is geared towards increasing treasury yields, since less regulations would yield far greater returns...

Don't get me wrong; I'm not defending the policy, I'm just pointing out it's most likely not just a governmental money grabbing scheme...

If you want to talk about taxes instead, I'll gladly join the government bashing!
