Last week, around 200 people gathered in downtown Madrid to protest against the construction of Sheldon Adelson's Eurovegas complex in their city. Adelson, CEO for Las Vegas Sands and the 14th wealthiest person in the world, will choose either Madrid or Barcelona as the location for the Las Vegas's sands next project - a $21 billion entertainment complex that includes 6 casinos and 12 hotels.

There are a fair number of regular contributors to this forum from Spain, so I am curious to see how they feel about it. I would imagine that it is hard to say "no" given the problems they are facing, and the need for anything to try and turn things around. Should be a spectacular place once it is all built up ...

Alert! Sheldon Adelson isn’t being well informed! Please make this thread reach his knowledge: He is thinking about Madrid or Barcelona because everyone thinks Portugal is a province from Spain, but it isn’t, this is also a country, with its own Government. And now, just a year ago, we made a project to build this huge dam that had created an enormous lake in a zone with low density of population. Now some investors are already trying to take some profit out of that huge lake, but they just seem not to move as they should. There are already some boats and rural tourism around, but it’s not attractive. I think that, if Mr. Sheldon Adelson would be aware of the potencial of that region, he would think twice before making the Las Vegas's sands next project in Spain and he would come to do that in Portugal. Besides, if wealthy people are already going to Portugal because of Algarve’s beaches, which is near Alqueva (the name the land where the dam and the lake are), they could also start going there and get the best from the sun and the joy of playing at the casinos. If they are protesting there, here in Portugal no one will protest. People need work and also need places that create richness in the country, like this project. Make this reach Mr. Sheldon Adelson, please! He will not regret (and if he wants me to help him, he can count on me)!

Hi guys!!
I don´t want 'EuroVegas' in my city, Barcelona. This guy want a little city without laws. If he want this... comeback to the USA. People with money thinks that they can do all they want. I wish my goverment show that is not true, in Spain at last.

People have to survive and if there's more jobs & more money then there's going to be more drugs and prostitution. It's just the way it is in most big cities, but if there's going to be over a quarter of a million legitimate jobs created be thankful. No one can help that there's going to be another 100,000 illegal jobs created, but that's todays world.

Hi again.
I don´t want a place out of law. Why the 'Casino Barcelona' (years in the bussiness) must accomplish the law and the news one dont? Because 21 billion $$. I don´t want my city work in this way. Seems Barcelona is out of the race and the complex will be in Madrid. Well, Esperanza Aguirre (president of Madrid) want this for her citizens... not strange.

The main reason against this project is related with the conditions he is asking for: free taxes, labour conditions, and also related with issues with a possible increase in drugs and prostitution. At the end, as usual, if he pays enough to the politicians he will get what he wants
To generate jobs to a nation with chronically high unemployment is not a bad thing. I understand the protesting in regards to the concessions that Adelson wants, but the only one that I would not budge on is changing immigration laws. Plenty of locals who are capable of filling positions.
