Is it then even worth depositing?
I have got back into poker having had a break for 3 years or so and am starting to relearn the basics and feeling my way through 2/4c and 3/6c limits at texas holdem.
I ran well for a short while and then stupidly forgot all about bank roll management and lost like $80 - paying too much for tourney buyins and started to play ridiculous loose aggressive against donkeys who wouldn't fold 72.
Essentially I don't have the lump sum to deposit enough to cover 20 buyins but feel I can build a bank roll if I deposit $40 and play 2/4 and buil up.

bankroll management is good only if you are a winning player, thats why i think for beginners it's a bit overrated especially at micros. now 3 years is a lot of time and as u can see, game has changed these days. 20 buyins is considered minimum to avoid going bust, less you have more chances are you might go bust even if you are a winning player. and if u have few buyins, u might be playing scared. u can either play sng/DON to increase it first to around 100$ where u cud be comfortable playing 2/4c or play shortstack/midstack and tighten up a bit to decrease variance. or just play as u do and add to your bankroll when u have more $ to spare

Start by finding the proper poker room to play the games you like. There are many choices and one of those since you are going to deposit is the first deposit bonus and the way it clears.gl

10 buy ins isn't that bad at such low stakes, but there are poker rooms with NL2 tables. So you would be able to play with 20 buy ins, even if you are only willing to deposit $40.

Myself started with $50 and have been up and down for two months other then depositing another $50 in February to collect a small bonus. Can't see why someone couldn't start out with $40 and build a BR as long as you play wisely and patiently. Of course it's based on what games you play. I play the small tournaments and SnG's $1.10 to $5.50. Been thinking about trying some of the larger buyins, but still skeptical. Good Luck on your mission!

You can only do bankrollmanagement if you have a roll so you can go up and down in limits if BRM says so. If you feel like just deposit but be prepared to bust which is not the end of the world cos its not a big roll.

Bankroll management is important. Though this sounds more like a "game selection" problem. You should always be careful with your game selection, especially in cash games where everyday grinders tend to lurk. Tournaments are good for a short bankroll, IMO. you may have to work longer & a little harder for the return, but the risk is way down.

Yeah I agree - even on the micro limits there's the same old people there on 888
It's funny i'm going all the way back to my online 'roots' - cash games were a secondary play initially after SNG's which I managed to make some money at, and learnt the ropes there as well as in some tournaments.
My major draw back was impatience. I wanted to win more, more quickly.
I think at 2/4 there's a tonne of fish who will mess with my bankroll - SNG's are a good suggestion.

since you do not have money to redeposit- whatever yanks your crank is a good idea it's only up to you to decide how to approach the rebuilding bankroll process, i personally wouldn't have the patience to rebuild it slowly, especially after i lost a huge part of it- probably i would donk out the rest as well- but good luck to you dude

20 buyins are not enough for any limit. When you have the skills for a higher limit the play with brm and grow uo step by step. When you like it to gamble then it is enough to play with one stack at the highest possible limit...
