This is just beyond my understanding. No preflop raise to see where he's at, check on the flop I can understand. But overall I have no clue what he was waiting for.

Impossible to say what goes through the head of some players but if we assume this player knows the value of a set then I'd guess something like

call preflop since he is out of position and he puts you on a strong hand raising utg
he doesn't want to get the pot too big preflop with just a pair. Some would say this is sensible play.

the flop is good for him but it's unlikely you have hit anything. Maybe he checks to induce a bet with overcards. If you have a flush draw you are likely to bet so not too many draws to worry about.

Maybe you are usually quite aggressive so he expects you to bet or maybe he thinks you fold too easily so he wants you to hit something.

The turn is in most cases a blank but he hopes that you will try to bluff. He is still worried that if he bets it will look too strong and you will instant fold. Or he just doesn't know how to build a pot with a good hand. He also over values his hand a little and thinks he is unbeatable so doesn't see the rush to win.

Then the river brings probably the worst card in the deck. Any ten is now beating him and he realizes the mistake. Yet if he bets now and gets raised he can only call. Very few hands will call a bet on the river cos it looks like a catch, the exception is of course AQ but he hopes AQ will bet out. He will call any river bet but its just gone too far to raise. It's not worth it to win this small pot.

That's how I see it playing in his head. maybe.

I can't really imagine what was on his mind that maked him to play the hand this way really...

My only guess is that he was multi-tabling and he simply didn't noticed his hand or something like that Confused Confused

He play save, too save for me. I wiil bet on flop to get more information. or he want made a trap but he cancel since had possibility straight on river. Was he passive player and a limper ? few hand history needed to analysis Smile Smile

I have a couple thoughts, but who really knows, but the player themself.

1. Maybe trying to trap someone by waiting for someone to bet.
2. Maybe thinking soemone had a flush or straight draw.

Why didn't you make a min bet to find out what was up. I mean a small pair of 5's isn't much, but a lot of players looking for the A so that's why they chase it to the river without betting. Who's to say though!
