Anyone tried it yet?
I installed the Win8 beta a few days ago - a friend and myself are going to write some apps for it in C# and C++ and hopefully have them ready for when windows goes to general-release.
Really interesting direction they have gone with it - the default display is kind of like looking at a smart-phone / tablet.
And all the development center stuff I've been going through is all geared towards creating these 'Metro style apps".
It's starting to grow on me - and from a development point of view it is awesome. I've downloaded MS VS 2012 beta as well - which is a full C#/C++/C/VB/ .NET IDE and it's really really good and easy to work with - I'm actually really looking forward to cranking out some apps on here.
We're (friend and I) going to start with a student orientated app (basically a study organiser type thing) - simply because we're both students so we know what students want.
But a bit further down the track I might look to make some windows 8 poker orientated apps as well!

I'm certain you've got an entire forum of willing "beta testers" that would happily try out any poker app you developed lol.
I got the early beta for 8 ages ago, but I just haven't had the time it'd require to install it and play around.
Saw a few preview vids of it, and at first I was aprehensive about it, because of how "app ortiented" it seemed to be. That was before I got an android phone, and now that I've gotten used to that kind of interface, I think it'd be pretty neat if it's well developed.
The history of windows though, has shown that they always make at least 1 crap OS after every good one they make. Ie:
95/98 - great ME - Horrible XP - Great Vista - Horrible 7 - mind blowingly amazing.
The market is rapidly trending towards seamless intergration systems that are fully customizable, so I'm really hoping they've clued into that, and made things like media sharing and social networking more intergrated. If the android OS system were ever to cross over to PC's, it'd be interesting to see how MS would change what they are doing.

Oh - windows 8 is super integrated. It's so forward thinking compared to windows7 they're nearly completely different OS's.
It's completely geared towards app integration, live accounts, social media, cloud-based computing, multiple hardware support (basically the same interface will roll-out across tablets, phones, laptops, net-books and PCs) And the key focus on all the app development is for the apps to be easily portable and integrating.
The APIs provided for interconnecting apps is simply amazing to say the least.

What's the DRM protection like though? Windows has been very keen on enforcing DRM, basically with vista and 7, they took it up a step and made started building it right into the kernel itself.

Haven't really looked much at DRM content - but I assume as you suggest, it's probably pretty heavy. When the APP-inteterface loads up, you can directly go into the Live! Stores, watch video/game previews, make purchases, etc - lots of direct links to content and I imagine all of that kind of content would be DRM encoded.
But yeah - really not sure quite what they've done regarding DRM.

Nope, still using XP Pro and ubuntu, and to be honest, if it was not for poker I don't think I would have XP at all. Do Microsoft release a new OS every year, would it not be better to just get one of them right...ohh wait, that's not going to make money. Not in to all this app business, few of my friends love them... consistently "I just got an app that..." they all seam pointless to me, I got one App on my phone, call blocker. Do I actually need apps for the PC. DRM is easy to get around, almost pointless.
Lets just all buy apple stuff, we all know its better.

If I had a clue about writing programs, then I would, I do have a few ideas for apps. The last time I did any5hit like that was on a C64, I made a mean flashing screen, every colour you can think off. Are you going to be selling? Do you need an app to make the apps? What are you planning on actually making? Have you booked the wedding venue yet?

I'm just now becoming user friendly with Windows 7. I can't keep up with all the capabilities that it has, but who actually can? good luck with 8 mate I'm staying here for awhile!

Set it up a last year with the Developer's Preview. Not much use then without a touch screen. (except for developers)
I'm sure it's revolutionary in terms of Windows because the basis is basically Windows 7 extremely expanded towards, like you said, social media, total Online integration etc etc. Metro Style will try to catch up to Apple I-generation, I-phone I-pad etc etc. (no one will be able to type let alone write in so many years... ...messaging via pre-determined "touch" messaging...)
My opinion on Windows evolution: (continuing on retribution's post)
95/98 - great (only 98 Second Edition IMO) ME - Horrible (garbage) 2000 - ok but didn't like it much (I was on XP before it was fully marketed) XP - Great (revolutionary IMO) Vista - Horrible (total misstep and garbage) 7 - mind blowingly amazing. (indeed) (XP +++++ )
Windows 8 - Microsoft realised Apple was right (as usual) and is now trying to catch up. I stuck to windows instead of Apple because the market wasn't there for Apple when I started my short-lived IT career. Pre- "I" generation. Linux is too complex for most and will never take off the way they predicted years ago. People want it easy... always....
But Windows 8 is taking the right steps, and would love to hear about some Apps Jess. Have fun with it.
