"As it has been for a century, skeet shooting will be an event in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The targets are clay pigeons, which explode into many bits when hit. However, at the same competition in the 1900 Olympics in Paris, the targets were real pigeons. The record shows that Belgian sharpshooter Leon de Lunden won the gold medal with a perfect score of 300 birds".
HAHA...some of those factoids are brilliant and i think they show how incredibly serious sport has become over the years.
As for a most medals - America trounces everyone else by far. The Soviet Union was made up of many countries so if you were to break down which actual countries the medal winners came from America would be even further ahead.

USA is by far the country with more gold medals win at the Olympics, three times more than Soviet Union. But more than the amount, i think the most importante is to look at the older olimpic records and try to realize if they will ever be beated.

A few days ago i had someone writing me that i should worry if Portugal didn't get any medal (it can be a small country, but usually will always get a medal or two, specially in athletism, or in judo, but this year isn't running well). I told me: China has 140 million inhabitants, Portugal has 10 million, so Portuguese should only worry about getting a medal if China get 140. Statistically, seems correct!

Wow! I knew the U.S. was on top, but remember all the U.S. is, are people from all over the world which makes them representitive of all the other countries. I mean, I wonder how many of the medals are won by Olympians born in the U.S. or even 1st generation natives?
Not knocking my own country, but I do acknowledge a lot of Americans are people from countries all over the world. It would be nice to know how long their families have been here in the U.S. 1st, 2nd, 3rd generations!
