I been wondering how long poker(5 Card Draw) been played in NZ, for while now. Its taken me months to find, any info about this topic, after searching on Google, web sites etc, finally found what i was researching for (Thanks to help from Te Papa(museum) Liberian). The 1st Recorded history of Poker in NZ is from newspaper.
From gold fields of south Island, miner's cheating at poker (Text in yellow in link), so it seems that poker was brought to New Zealand by miner's that came from USA, after gold? So poker has been in NZ for over 130+ year's. (I didn't know this, as i thought may of arrived here from USA service men during WW2)

Are there many/any Blind person's that play poker? and what about Deaf person's? PS; What about colour blind person's do the just see black?
English actor Joseph Crowell[who?] reported[where?] that the game was played in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1829, with a deck of 20 cards, and four players betting on which player's hand was the most valuable.[citation needed] Jonathan H. Green's book, An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling (G. B. Zieber, Philadelphia, 1843), described the spread of the game from there to the rest of the country by Mississippi riverboats, on which gambling was a common pastime. As it spread north along the Mississippi River and to the West during the gold rush, it is thought to have become a part of the frontier pioneer ethos.
Soon after this spread, the full 52-card English deck[citation needed] was used and the flush was introduced. If you ask me i think it was a game invented by travellers that developed it during their travel so thats why is so hard to tell an exact location.

Interesting story...also it seems that cheating is also connected to poker since its started because of maybe the suckout that is happening in games today and before...

Etymology (origin) of the word "poker" - There's no definitive answer to how we got the name "poker" for the popular card game. One theory says that is comes from the German verb "pochen," which means to brag or bluff. There is a contrasting theory that says it comes from the French "poque,' a card game similar to today's poker.
The exact origin of poker is unknown but many have speculated that it originated from a 16th century Persian card game called As Nas. Played with a 25 card deck containing five suits, the rules were similar to today’s Five Card Stud. Others are of the opinion that it was invented by the Chinese in 900 A.D. In all likelihood, the game derived from elements of various gambling diversions that have been around from the beginning of time.
Etymology of "texas hold 'em" - The true history of Texas Hold'em is yet unknown. The story goes that the very first location were the game Texas Hold'em was ever played was in Robstown in Texas around 1900. What made Texas Hold'em really famous was the World Series of Poker Tournament. The WSOP exists since 1970, where it took place for the first time at the Horseshoe in Las Vegas and ever since then the game Texas Hold'em, has been played by poker players all over the world.
There’s a lot of different stories about how it started out, but surprisingly the story doesn’t begin in Texas as you would think. Also it’s never been called Taxes hold’em as a few silly people have said. The most likely origin of the game’s name comes from a story from Life Magazine back in the early 1960′s a game called ‘Hold Me Darling’ that was becoming a big poker variant, which later became ‘Hold Me’ and then lastly Hold’em as the final name. No clue as to the inventor, but this seems to be the origin of the name.

Wow....ther's really loads of educated and clever people here at Bankrollmob....many with History degrees and diplomas. All of this makes really interesting reading and makes me want to go and learn more...so off I go!!
