Poker players in the movies tend to be spies, criminals, millionaires and rogues. They aren't always nice people but they tend to be suave, sophisticated, arrogant and above all cool. What about real life poker players? Ignoring the standard image of the online pro, the unsocial recluse multitabling for hours at his PC with multi-screen set up and tracker software, what do you make of the poker players you see on TV and in casinos? Rich they may be but do you see them winning any prizes for personality?

Maybe an autism personality of the year or something. But most of them are quite detached from the real world it seems and poker is all they know. Obviously there is exceptions, Daniel Negreanu, TRYS to be bubbly and funny, but to me seems weird and cringy when he does.

Hahaha. The personality varies greatly, usually professional players are players with deep pockets, high social status .. After the branch exists variety of online players, tournaments also means you can find all kinds of players .. In my opinion depends on the environment you play poker personalities that you are getting there ..
I my opinion there are two types of poker players. Pre-Moneymaker and Post-Moneymaker. The poker player of today can be viewed as the unsociable person who's detached from society. Pre moneymaker players were the poker players who played poker in the casinos. believe it or not poker is a sociable game when played in a live environment.
soo here is my answer. the post moneymaker players are the the players that the world knows as the Nanonoko's of the world and the premoney maker players are like the Daniel Negreanu's

Agree with zerostar, geeky is the new cool. For on-line players I would say most of us see each other as a bit geeky, but from those who look in they would say cool. Live poker has all sorts of different people(like on-line) but you get to see who you play, these range from geeks to cool and from nice people to damn arrogant., but mostly fun people.

I used to play a lot of live pub poker, in rural Aus and it was anything but geeky; with regulars often getting into fights, caught stealing, smashing beer glasses into other peoples heads, we all got kicked from one venue because too many drugs were being taken at the tables..
However, online I would say is a whole other kettle of fish; I'd wager that a lot of online reg's are pretty geeky - myself included. Although I prefer the term 'nerd'.
------------ Mind, I wouldn't say the alternative was 'cool' - from what I saw of the live scene, the pub scene at least and some small stakes casino players, it was mostly degenerate losers and petty-criminals..Not exactly 'cool'.
I notices basically James bond etc they all have poker playing in them even oceans 13 and there all great poker player yet none of the movies show them grinding tables To look like they are good they just go in and can hit the hands and win lol

I think the "coolness" of pokerplayers varies alot. Some are multitabling 14 hours a day and doesn't see the sunlight while some only play at casinos and using social skills to take money from their opponents!

poker id cool only when you enjoy it !! or else its very harsh and bad coz it ruins everything ie the loss may take toll on our mood in turn ruin your daily chores etc !! the coolness of poker depends on individuality ...

forget tv and the movies, if you look hard at any top pro you could name you will realise they are all geeks, some are more obvious like negreanu but even someone who seems uber cool like jason mercier is blatantly nerdy. anyone who gets that deep into this game is always gonna be a gek deep down, i personally have spent most of my adult life building up my cool rep. but i know no matter how cool people see me as being i will always be a geek at heart. liv boeree, vanessa rousso both pretty nerdy, just watch any of the after match interviews the pros give, their inner geek always shows through. that is just my opinion but it is something i really noticed of late
