You can't edit if the post is more than X minutes old, I think the cut-off is after 10 minutes or something like that.

You can only edit your post for a certain amount of time after posting (not sure how long exactly) unless admin gives you the power to edit that post forever, which he has been known to do for the first post in certain threads, usually leagues or diary entries, which need to be updated.
