Is roulette bad?  0
In some places gambling is illegal and across the world many think of it as immoral. I've always been of the opinion people can spend their money how they like and open use of guns and religious intolerance is far worse for society. But let's consider the actual morality of gambling without being biased.

We (should) all know poker is a game of skill and even though an addiction to gambling is still a problem caused by poker, the freedom to play poker and lose your hard earned wages through your own incompetence of the game but still receive some pleasure in the playing of that game, is a freedom we should all have. I can't see anything immoral about the distribution of money through poker even if the poker sites are taking a hefty cut of the money.

Black jack is clearly in the casino's favour and there may be some players who don't know this. But then there is still some skill in the game and once you learn how to play you should know the house always wins. I don't think the casino is misleading anyone and it's a fair way to earn money. Of course no amount of skill is going to help a bj player make a killing at blackjack these days when there are so many decks in play but it is still a game.

Roulette however is just picking numbers. It's purely random and -ev for everyone apart from the casino. Yet people play roulette expecting to win. They believe in luck and that is dangerous. Is it immoral for casinos to part these fools from their money. Would it not be a better world without roulette making companies richer? Now I say that having played roulette and enjoyed it so my own opinions are mixed.

I'm picking on roulette cos I see that as the best example of pure gambling. Players have no control over the game and due to that 0 they are betting to lose unless they hit and run. Even sports betting allows you to pick the sport, although that too I think is deceptively -ev and so possibly bad for society. Should gamblers be allowed to lose all their money if they have families to support? Is it a case of moderation or is the opportunity to gamble enough to cause problems and not beneficial enough to anyone except companies to justify the negatives.

Personally - I would never run a casino / gambling house - I would have an ethical issue with it. Regarding casinos in general - I'd probably say they have a right to exist, but I think it's pretty immoral to operate one..

It's like heroin - I think it should be legalised / decriminalised and people should have the freedom to take what they like - but it's pretty immoral to be a big-time heroin dealer (not some street dealer feeding their habit). Likewise I think we should have the right to smoke - but I think it's pretty immoral to run a tobacco company / sell cigarettes.

I find small pokies-venues far more morally reprehensible than the (larger) casinos though to be honest. At least a casino offers some entertainment, a night out, etc. Pokies venues just exist (here in Australia at least) in the poorest suburbs and towns and are just a drain on the communities that surround them.

The only thing that really is bad for society are people who want to tell other people how they have to life their lifes.

Yes, roulette is -ev*, but so is going to the cinema.

Roulette is a unbeatable game, just like any casino game. If you have the intention of going in to make money, then you won't. You might win a few days in a row, but you will always end up losing in that game. If you have the intention to go have some fun and know that you will most likely lose and hope for a win, then all the power to you. Everyone has their own way of having fun and spending money.

Anybody who plays casino games knows that these games are -EV and the casino always wins, be it blackjack, roulette or whatever. That being said I sometimes like to play blackjack, and sometimes on a lucky streak I have taken those winnings to roulette too, but always with money from poker winnings so it is not out of pocket. Poker may be a game of skill, but if you are not using sound bankroll management it is gambling - trust me. In my first years of online poker I often ran up a lucky streak and kept pushing it, playing up to NL2000 at times against online pros, and then a few bad beats and you are depositing and grinding the micros again. Never again.

I thing that the casino does not require legalization. Almost nothing depends on player,as opposed to poker. So i dont play roulette and other same games.

To me, it’s just a game like any other. And in some you have more probability of winning than in others, and in some you have better winning prizes than in others. In some countries they don’t even let you play card games, but that would be theme for another thread. You chose roulette because it’s in the casinos, think about that game of choosing a bag at PKR. There’s no way one can make an idea of what that bag may have inside, and they allow player to bet high values, like $100 or even more. But only those who want to play it will play, no one is forced to it. Confused

It's pretty much like blackjack to me. Your odds of winning are pretty high (close to 50%), but in the long run, you're gonna lose cause of the 0 and 00. So playing it once in a while is ok, if you win some then you can keep playing with your profits or stop playing to keep your profits. But if you lose money, then why not stop?

If you play once, win or lose, just never play it again, that's my advice Big Smile

Yep! Roulette the rude of all evil when it comes to gambling. I lost $15,000 playing roulette between Vegas and Laughlin. Even after all the nights I fared well and money I won playing digital poker and slots after four years of living 60 miles from both cities I tally exactly that much lost on roulette.
Don't get me wrong,I had nights where I was up $7000, casino compt me rooms, gave me souveniers and all. Long run I lost out or I don't know where the 415,000 went. All in good, clean fun!

I think the worst part is that all types of casino games, not just roulette are put in the same category as poker which is definately wrong!

I do not play casino games but people that like to gamble should be allowed to do what they want with their money.

Roulette and slots are just the money-machines for the casinos. Problem is that these games can only exist when players are dumb enough to think that they can beat the game or that the return is worth the risk. Just go home, turn on your computer, log into a pokerroom, let me know which one and dump that money into my account !! Agree

If im not wrong about this the biggest earnest in a casino is the slot machines.
There are more players addicted in slots, than any other game.
Besides the fact that any one is free to spend the money however he/she like
its not easy to fight an addiction.

Legalise heroin? wth are you thinking i wonder. One of the most stupid things ive heard lately.

Its not Bad per se, but the odds which may look pretty good are overall stacked against the player for the house to win. You never get the true odds on the probability cos of the odd number of numbers used which is more than double the best odds, so that even if you think you are getting 50/50, you are still the underdog. So overall its generally on the bad side!

Yep.
But that comes at no suprise. The house edge is high and the game play is fast = lots of $$$ for the casino.

no roulette is not bad- bad are only people who lose money they can afford to lose. same goes to any casino game, and even beyond casino- yo can spend your money foolishly on many things- drugs, whores, alcohol etc. the main point here is that it's not what you earn but what you keep is most important. and if you play just for fun it's not a problem if you lose some, doesn't matter on which game
