High-Roller Sentenced To Jail For Defrauding UK Banks

Last week a Greek businessman and poker player was sentenced to 7 years in jail for defrauding UK banks out of some 750 million British Pounds. Achilleas "The Don" Kallakis, 44, lived a jet-set lifestyle of high-stakes real estate purchases and casino/poker gambling. In total, he invested in 16 real estates for €120,000,0000 from 2003 to 2008 and had a private jet, helicopter and super y[...]   Read more » High-Roller Sentenced To Jail For Defrauding UK Banks

So the sentence is another 7 years of free food and shelter. The difference this time is that the state is paying and not the banks. It doesn't seem fair does it? One would think that the amount of jail time would be proportional to the amount of money they stole, not just the crime committed.

@lukasb- well imo there is a small difference between free food and shelter he will be getting in jail and what he was used to... of course a lot depends on how much money he is prepared to shell out to his lawyers- his jail time can be shortened by few years for sure...well he will have lots of time to play strip poker in jail.. Tongue

The jails are soft as s**t over here anyway. A lot of people re offend just to go back to jail because its easier and better than if they were on the outside. They get all sorts of perks. It's like being in a b&b.

Wow, I wonder how did the story of Achilleas "The Don" Kallakis started. Did he first started winning at the game and only after, moved by the greed and the power that all the recognition from the victories were giving , he started scamming? Or did he started scamming since the beginning and the “a lie repeated millions of times becomes true” effect allowed him to get were he did? We are talking about five years, this guy can almost be compared to Bernard Madoff, the Wall Street businessman that did something looked like this and no one suspected until he decided to tell the truth to the world, knowing he would be judged for it…

Good day everyone Smile
The crime committed by him is bigger than the punishment he has received for his fraud is really small ...but the way he lead his life till he got caught was king size !!! with the amount of money he have right now and he surely will have influential people around him ... they will help him out and he may even get released before 7 years !!! whatever he was genius ... he pulled off such a big fraud !!! but eventually got caught ...

Good luck at the tables Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I guess they'll be playing poker, but the kind that they like to play in jail can be a bit more painful unless, of course, your on top. LOL

A bit of sick humor!

So, to rake the bank for 26 million cash based on their word that they were to convert some ferry into yacht is just stupidity on the bank's behalf themselves. The problem is, wealthy people that are actually crooks get this type of cash witghout the banks performing legitimate verification of such things. Not so wealthy people have to fill out their life history plus the bank has an estimator or an appraiser verify the property that one is borrowing against.

Oh well! They're in jail and the bank won't receive, but a portion of their money back. Of course after they sale off everything these two have.

This guy was on television a few times. I must say, i was never impressed by his poker skills, he played like a rich fish. But it looks his bank cheating skills are much better.

I don’t think this is bad publicity for poker, as he was also playing other games, this is bad publicity for business men and bad news for the greedy ones!!!
