how do i take a screen shot . i have been shown before but i have forgotten. i wanted to take a shot then put it in a paint program. thanks for any advise

You just hit the key on your keyboard that says "prt sc" or 'print screen'.
Then the screen will be in your 'clipboard' which means you can 'paste' it into a graphics program (like MS Pain). Just go to the edit menu and select 'paste' or hit ctrl-V on your keyboard.
