Copy/Pasting info into BRM as a forum post  0
After an absence of three or four months, I resumed posting and visiting BRM recently and one thing I have noticed a LOT of is members copying material from other poker sites, and then pasting it into a forum post without referring to the source, and without adding anything personal to the information. I called out one newcomer on it a couple of days ago, and I have noticed one regular poster who only starts threads by copying info from other sites. Is it a big deal? It does give forum members something to discuss, information which otherwise might not be posted as "poker news", but some other members are also starting to call out these guys over this outright plagiarism. What do you think?

I agree with you. There's no problem in using other people's material if you refferr to it's original source. It's common courtesy and also ethical.

If it's a big problem, then I'm very surprised why *nobody* reports the actual copy-pasted posts to us?

It's obvious when somebody is copy/pasting stuff just to get points and we always remove those and take away the points as well, usually within the same day.

First off, great to see you back in the forum and that goes jovica also.

As you've stated, to use others material it should be referenced or at least state they're using otherwise copying material from someone or somewhere else.

Personally I can't stand it when you can tell it was written from a proffessional and not saying some people don't have the capability. I've just seen / read some things that look as if it came straight out of a book.

Take care mahdrof and hope to see you more often.

Well I have also noticed that, including that regular poster ..
I think that the poster should refer to the original source.. I mean without doing this they are just making threads using other people's material to earn mob points Angry

I think I know which member you are referring to as I've noticed most of their threads are copied news articles but this same member does reply to other threads and at least it's not brain dead copy-pasting of meaningless introductions or old posts, the kind where you see "the article above" or "this thursday is" with no date.

In general, I think sharing poker news is probably a good thing but it is plagiarism and the very least they should do is comment on it and say this is what I found on another site. But putting a link to that site or naming it is probably against brm rules as it's advertising a competitor so this is not so straight-forward. So maybe it is better to plagiarize than to break rules or not share anything interesting from any source.

With all due respect, the guy has over 200 threads that are all copy/paste from other sites, often several in the same day.

This is along the lines of how I feel as well, however the guy could put some more effort into it, otherwise what's to prevent everyone from copying stuff from other sites and starting threads and collecting points without working a single brain cell?

Why doesn't anybody report some of them, when we don't notice them?

if article is good but copy paste there is nothing wrong about it.i use only this site and i like to read what members post ,u get just 10,20 points u need lot of copy pasting it is not worth it

Obviously there comes a time where it's not "worth it" for us to deal with it. We can't possible monitor everything and we are not the Internet Cops either. If we notice someone is clearly copy/pasting with the intent of earning MobPoints, then we delete it and remove points. If we don't see it, and nobody reports it, then it will stay.

I'm sure that sometimes something gets copy/pasted in here which we don't see and/or act on, but the user who posts it might do it to start a discussion and not with the sole purpose of earning Mob Points. In that case, it's not such a big deal, again, because we are not Internet Cops and we don't have unlimited resources to deal with everything, so we have to prioritize.

I can understand that.

I believe its a bit obvious when this is going on.
Its clearly that it is an article taken from somewhere else, and while if its a personal one
you can post the author, if its a post from a forum you cant do that for the obvious
hammer reasons Smile
Bottom line either you post the author or dont post the article at all.
I agree with mahdrof on this

i don't think it's a problem, because if someone does this then it's giving people a chance to read it who would have otherwise missed the original article,i think however that they should mention this at the bottom of their own article.

G'day mate

I could not help but laugh when i read this post as i immediately thought about all the cut and paste post from one particular mobster who only seem to post that way. But we will not mention any names mr S????888 Smile

Have you also noticed that almost all there post should be posting under a news type thread but they are always in our poker threads. I personal write all my post and I do not general us cut and paste. I am using cut and paste for my short story post since I write them using my word processor.

Be cool and best of luck at the tables.
Ronin Cool

Well the biggest reason why you should be concerned about the copy/paste people, is how it affects BRM in the search engines. Forums that have lot's of posts with copied content wild end up getting the site flagged as hosting a lot of duplicate content.

It might not be too hard to check new posts against say, copyscape via a script. Would make things a lot easier for admin.

As for not citing reference, that's a big no-no. I mean, if you're going to rip someone off, at least give them some recognition.
