The poker festival was taking place during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend (29th March - 1st April 2013) at the legendary Burlington Hotel, Dublin. The Irish Open is the longest running No Limit Texas Hold 'em poker tournament in Europe and second longest in the world after the World Series of Poker, Las Vegas. First organized in 1981 by Terry Rogers, a well known Irish bookmaker, the tournament has experienced tremendous growth over the years and has become very well known for its electric atmosphere and character like no other. With the prospect of playing in Europe's oldest poker tournament, a reduced entry fee of €2,000+€250 and copious amounts of Guinness on offer, 505 players sat down for Day 1 of the Main Event.

I have family in Ireland. They have a cottage across from the beach in Bettystown, which is a little town by the mouth of the Boyne River where the Battle of the Boyne was fought between the Protestants and the Catholics a few centuries ago...
There's a golf course there which is one of the oldest in Europe too...
Nice place Ireland is! Like to go back sometime for a wee visit and a tour of the Guiness plant!

Did you know that Sir Sean Connery was nominated to be the next king of Ireland. They did a public opinion poll once and asked people in Ireland how they would feel about Sir Sean Connery being named the King of Ireland and the cool thing was that 86% of those Irish people polled said that King Connery would be great. The same people was then inform that he was a Scotsman and 70% said he could over come that handicap with a little time in Ireland with his people.
I just love the idea the Sir Sean Connery is so beloved that even the Irish would looked the other way to have him as one of their own.

Even with the financial crisis that passes through all european countries, the Irish Open i sable to keep is way among the biggest and the best live events related to the game. 505 starting field for Day1 proves it very well. And, with a €2250 buy-in, prizes must be nice, we must be talking about a nearly six digit sum!
