Ronaldo Joins Team PokerStars  +1
Considered by many as one of the greatest footballers of all time, he will be participating in advertising campaigns and playing live events representing PokerStars.
He joins Tennis stars Boris Becker and Rafal Nadal, field hockey player Fatima Moreira de Melo and skier Marcus Hellner as the latest sports star turned sponsored poker pro at 'Team PokerStars SportsStars'.
Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima, better known as just Ronaldo, won two World Cups with Brazil and numerous honours with teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter Milan.
He is one of only three players to win the FIFA Player of the Year award three times, and in total scored 342 times for club and country.

Interesting as he is one of football greatest, but he never made a very intelligent impression, so I wonder how good he is at the pokertables Question

who cares really? personally I don't like that concept at all, many of these former sports hero's dont know anything about playing poker. It's just one big marketing trick. PokerStars is very good at that we can say Smile But for me it does not add anything positive to the image of a poker pro player.

Interesting move but i would have choosed a more actual star of football like Cristiano Ronaldo maybe Smile

It's nice to see that stars choosed top players from the most appreciated sports to rep their site.

Pokerstars hits the Latin American audience with a scoop like Big Ronaldo.......... Most people today would have assumed Little Ronaldo (Christiano), but don't suppose he has time to play serious poker at the moment given his schedule..... And guess he doesn't need the money either!

I like football and i still haven't seen any about this news yet until i enter BRM and i read this post? How great can BRM be? I intend to give more importance to the thread created at BRM than to the news itself, this just shows how important to global information this forum can be. It already is by helping so many players with their game strategies, but it also informs all users about what's going on in the poker world. Thanks BRM for turning this possible. About Ronaldo, after leaving football career, what can be better than a poker table to keep having some ocupation? And he even turns it better on his side winning some bankrolls with advertising! Big Smile

Former Brazilian football star Ronaldo Nazario is the latest athlete to become a member of Team PokerStars SportStar, the online poker site announced on Thursday. The man best known simply as "Ronaldo" joins an impressive group of sports stars including Rafael Nadal, Boris Becker, and Fatima Moreira De Melo.

Ronaldo is widely considered one of football's all-time greats, earning numerous awards during his 19-year pro career. He played in 98 international matches for his native Brazil, scoring 62 goals and is the all-time leading goal scorer in the history of the World Cup (15 goals). He played a major role on the Brazilian national team that won the World Cup in 2002.

Since retiring from soccer in 2011, Ronaldo launched a company called 9ine, which is now one of the top sports and entertainment agencies in Brazil. He made the jump into poker last year by signing Team PokerStars Pro Brazil member Andre Akkari. As the first poker player to be signed by the sports agency, Akkari’s reps are responsible for managing his image, brand planning, sponsorship, and more.

Ronaldo’s presence in the poker community has already produced a boost in participation. Before Akkari joined 9ine, the Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP) was attracting around 400 players per event. Five months after Akkari and Ronaldo teamed up, the BSOP event in December attracted over 1,500 players. The series is now sponsored by PokerStars, and Ronaldo is expected to be a regular fixture when Season 7 kicks off in São Paulo in July.
