odds on both players having 3 of a kind top card  0
any idea what the odds would be anybody?

i had 3 of kind, 2 aces plus my A3, to get beat by A5

about 9 hands later...

i had 3 of kind, 2 jacks plus my J9, to get beat by JQ

both times the aces (obivously) and jacks were top card on 5 community cards

it cant be high surely!

both having ACE in hand is pretty good chance since most players only play with good hand
A3 are very easyly dominated im pretty sure calling with A+ rag loses more than wins in long run

Steffi, do you even read what people say in your threads or do you just create them then forget about them?
Just because you got some good advice in your rush poker thread and you never respondd to any of them.
Bit pointless asking a question if you don't read the answers.

------------
Concerning this thread tho. You shouldn't really be playing A3. I don't know how that hand played out but the only time you should be in a pot with it is if you raise OTB to steal the blinds or if your in the BB and its limped to you. Or in the sb for the same reason as the button raise.

Bit like my Mrs. She has a habit of asking a question and then walking out of the room before I even get a chance to respond.

of course i read every thread, ive started them for a reason. and ive learnt some valuable stuff already here.

as for not playing A3, it was suited in position and then when 2 aces flopped i think the right move is to play, no?

Steffi. Having got into the hand at little or no cost to you, then following the flop you still have to exercise caution as pretty much any A hand has you beat. Its here where your knoawledge of your opponent and their calling strategy will help.

Well i think most of the responses here are right , a-3 is a reasonable hand but noting more than that,as the kicker is worthless , i made it a self rule to only commit to a A-7 or higher.

May the pokergods shine theire lights on you all this weekend..... Worship

...lol... THAT is hilarious.... Big Smile

I'm imagining that being spoken in an English accent. Sounds like a line you'd hear in Coronation Street Smile

Although,....being from the U.K. you COULD be Scottish, Welsh, or Northern Irish,....in that case,...it wouldn't sound quite as funny.... It's gotta be English to invoke the funny factor...and not that high English like the Royals or the Iron Lady,.... has to be that low sounding Cockney stuff...

Now if it were somebody 'Farting',.....diffferent story.... Confused

As for Steffi's hand.... The Bullet Man has hit the nail on the head....

...UNLESS,.....you are a Russian immigrant and you are playing in a BrM tourney,....in THAT case....just fearlessly shove ANY ace rag you get....

------------
....................................................................................................

Let me just add,....I'll usually always play and ace rag, if it's suited...AND it doesn't cost much,...being whatever the blind is, or maybe just a wee bit more but not much. Getting a flush isn't too easy,...but it does happen enough times to make it worth a small bet. Not much beats the nut flush, and a full house or higher is very unlikely to happen... Smile

G'day 8wall

I do hope you realize an Ace 8 is a weaker starting hand then a suited Ace 3.
With any Ace 6-9 you have no chance of using both your cards to help you build a straight.
Doyle Brunson said he can always tell when a player at WSOP is closer to being a pro or a rookie by have often they play card below Ace 10.
be cool and best wishes to you.

Good guess, I'm from Preston in the North West. About 30 miles away from where Coronation Street is made.

Ran A3s vs A5o on equilab and on the flop the equity of each hand is 49.68% and 50.32% respectively...with two random cards to come both hands are 50.00% on the river. Have folded a min raise to a 3 bet reraise in this spot.

It's not really a question of odds since the mathematical probability of two people both hitting trips is not the same odds as someone else happening to hit a flop, with hands you were both willing to call preflop. What's interesting is that whenever you hit trips you seem to doubt that your opponent has better as though it's barely possible when the fact that it is possible should give you enough concern.

One of the most important reasons to raise preflop is to get an indication of your opponent's hands. It's no good calling with good hands and hitting a good flop, thinking I have the third nuts therefore the chances are I am ahead. This is not how poker works. You always try to get a read on your opponent even though sometimes it's impossible. Always guess your opponent's range.

So you may get into a sick situation where you have trip Qs with king kicker. The play preflop instantly warns you to be weary of dangerous hands. The villain bets out and reraises the flop, you have to be prepared to lay down your good hand if you are not already pot committed. You have to consider what your opponent could have in this spot - only a high pocket pair and not giving you the credit for trips. based on his previous play is it likely he has you beat, in which case make the fold. Even a really good hand can be beat.

This is really important in regards to aces and is a very good reason not to play your crappy aces.

Otherwise, if you simplify things so w're not talking about hand ranges. It's basically like this: You have two cards and there's also 3 cards on the flop that you're aware of, so we take the deck (52) and subtract the 5 known cards leaving 47 unknown. Now, since your opponent has 2 cards the chances of them having the 1 remaining card you're after is 2/47 or 22.5:1

However, in reality- you need to consider hand ranges, so if your opponent is ALSO representing having trips then the chances are far greater than 22 to 1.
