Second time in a row that I am out in the driveway playing basketball with my son, and my neighbour blasts his radio at us. I know the ball makes a bit of noise, but we are literally out there for 30 minutes before doing something else. So neighbour, I hope you enjoyed your afternoon of listening to Rage Against the Machine, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice In Chains, and other alternative hard rock really loud - suck on dat neighbour.

My neighbours are in their 60s and never had kids. Trust me we are not a noisy bunch, which made it that much more irritating to me that the noise of a bouncing ball was disturbing themso much that they have to blast their elevator music at us.
Just tell them it occurred to you, that the noise might bother them, and if so if you can come to some arrangement about specific times when you play. That way it won't cause any irritation when you do play.
Most of the time they won't even admit to being annoyed, and the passive aggressive behavior will simply stop. If you ignore them, you stand a good chance that it will escalate over the years, and that's no fun for anyone...

Sux as its better to have a good neighbour then a far friend as we say in Holland..... I do think there is a good thing bout ur neighbours aswell.....As they could have been Justin Bieber fans

I know your feeling, something similar happened to me and I'm only sorry I was too polite in my replies. I'm sure if I was such an ignorant no one would come to my door again.
It was during a dinner with frends, the first one I did in my new house, on Saturday at 23:00 and the noise came from our children playing.
Next time I will kick their asses for all the stairs. I'm in a phase of my life in which I'm sick and tired of being polite to people who don't deserve.
They (my neighbours and yours) have been accustomed too well imho.
Don't care about them imho: you have nothing to explain, they are the ones who have to talk first imho.
Keep on playing with your son (always at allowed hours of the day) ....after all their musical tastes are not so bad

Actually Magatt, they normally play elevator music, the hard rock I blasted at them was MY radio tuned to my music. In many ways I would think we are the ideal neighbours because we are rarely at home. My wife and I work full time jobs, the kids are at school, the kids have activities like dance, football (soccer) and scouting, plus there is homework and housework to be done, so really rare that we make noise. And yes, always respectful of the hours. There have been times when he is having a barbecue party where I will hold off from cutting my grass for an extra day so as not to be a nuisance.
I agree with some of what Marqis said about talking to them, but if they had a problem why didn't they come to see me? And even then what are they going to say, "Don't bounce balls and play with your kids?" Fcuk them. I take too much sh!t every day from my boss and from assh*les in traffic who think nothing of risking an accident to gain two car lengths, to get to a long weekend like we just had and put up with more assh*les blasting music at me because I am playing with my children making normal sounds and voices associated with these types of activities.
I will say this, after I switched off the music at the end of the afternoon it was so quiet you could hear a mouse fart.

Who knows why anyone does anything? Maybe they're just petty people, getting worked up about nothing; maybe some friends of theirs, who enjoy stirring up conflict between people, overheard the noise while visiting, or talking on the phone with them, and seized the opportunity to get their trouble-making fix...
I'm mostly a pragmatic person, choosing the strategy with the best chance of a good result. In my experience talking mostly takes care of the situation, and prevents any future trouble. If that doesn't work you could also burn down their house, which would also be a pragmatic solution to the problem (but seriously don't do that, especially if your houses are close to each other).
I used to play guitar in a heavy metal rock band, that rehearsed every Sunday morning in the attic of my moms house. After some initial complaints, we went round the neighborhood talking to the neighbors about it, and listening to their reservations. We then came up with a plan where we would apply some sound isolation, and keep to a strict schedule once a week. The fact that we went to visit them, and got them to agree that they could live with it under those conditions, meant we played there for many years without any trouble.
In fact the one neighbor that held out the longest, eventually succumbed to peer pressure from the other neighbors, who were already on board...

Nice story Marqis, but IMHO there is a difference between you regularly playing very loud music and me playing ball with my son for 30 minutes. Anyways, mission accomplished - played b-ball tonight for 30 minutes without having elevator music blasted at us.

It's to bad some neighbours are like that. You got off easy just having to listen to their music. The same thing was reported in the Toronto Star not to long ago but with more serious ending. Neighbours 15 year old son was shooting hoops in his driveway. His dad & him even built a barricade between houses to prevent any windows from being broken. Neighbour sues for $25,000 claiming the noise from the bouncing ball disturbed her peace & quality of life. Have not heard whether this has been settled or not but the paper did publish her name & address so I am sure the rest of the people on that street made her life a living hell. Main comment from every one else was that at least he was getting some exercise & not planted in front of a video game.

I just can't see how a basketball can make enough noise to even be considered irritating, but I guess to each their own. Personnaly it seems a bit ridiculous to try getting back by them playing the elevator music so if the basketball's annoying I'll bet they really enjoyed the Alice-in-Chains and Rage Against Machine.
