In poker, "the nuts" refers to an unbeatable poker hand. According to some poker experts, the term originated in the old west, where players often bet their horse and wagon. When a player put up his horse and wagon in a game, he would be required to remove the nuts from his wagon wheels and place them in the pot, so that he could not flee if he lost the bet. Therefore, it was assumed that anyone would bet "the nuts" with only with the best possible poker hand.
------------ plus the ........ Cool fact: Similarly, a "nut" player is one who tends to play only strong hands. A "calling station" is someone who frequently checks and calls, but rarely raises

Very educational little read which I was not aware of. Well, part of it I was not aware of. I didn't know where the term "the nuts" came from, but I believe I was familiar with the calling station term.

Some poker hands have a great story behind them. None are as famous as “Wild Bill” Hickok’s ” Dead Man’s Hand, which he got on the day he got shot and killed in Deadwood, on August 2nd, 1876. Think about that the next time you are dealt two black aces and a pair of black eights!
Wild Bill Hickok was a legendary gunfighter in the Wild West, but he was also known as a veteran of the Civil war and a professional gambler. There are many stories surrounding this notorious figure. He worked together with Buffalo Bill during the Civil War, worked both as a gunfighter and a sheriff, and it is claimed he was Calamity Jane’s lover. It is his death though, that poker players first think of when they hear about Wild Bill.
As he was playing a poker game in the Number Ten Saloon in Deadwood, Dakota,” Crooked Nose Jack ” Mcall came in and shot him from behind in the head. Hickock died with the hand Ace of Clubs and Spades, 8 of Clubs and Spades, and one unknown card. A-A-8-8 is forever after known as a Dead Man’s Hand in poker. What the unknown card was, is debated even to this day. Mcall’s motivation for the murder is not clear, but it is believed due to money or that Hickok may have killed his brother. Mcall was hanged for the crime on March 1, 1877. Wild Bill on the other hand is inducted in the Poker Hall of Fame, and he is one of the most well-known figures from the Wild West. There is a movie from 1995 called Wild Bill, starring Jeff Bridges, depicting the life of this American folk hero.
If u ask me Bill looks like an veritable gipsy lol
