Not having a great time trying to trap people lately. AA and KK seems to always make me lose if I min raise and try to trap then but people can do it to me without ever losing when they min raise to trap but with me they always hit something. You can say why min raise but when I raise more they always fold so those hands are wasted otherwise.

Anyone else have these problems or are you a master trapper?

I would agree with that. Maybe I am just having a bad night but then again it happens all the time with me.

Isn't it better to raise your standard raise amount?

If they fold you still get the blinds and when you minraise you give the SB & BB a very cheap price to see a flop and outflop you. Also people in front of you are not going to fold when they limped for just 1 BB...

With AA I usually try to trap pre-flop but then go all-in after the flop - You can't slow play unless you have the nuts because it's gonna hurt you more often than not.

With KK I usually raise to make a nice pot and then if an ace doesn't show up I push and if it does I check/fold.

This usually works fine for me - just don't get many of them lately.

I would try something different but on one table this last hour I have had AA, KK three times and QQ twice and its been folded before I have even a chance to bet. hate when that happens. Sad

How many times i have seen big raises preflop with AA and KK and then shoving all in
after the flop no matter what the board is just to find out that they are already behind Smile
Depends on the players you have on the table and with what cards they usually call raises.
For example there are players calling any raise with any suited cards.

I never want to trap someone with big pocket pairs as a general rule!

I mean if you do not bet hard from start usually you'll find yourself behind and then you lose more money that winning.

Nicely played, you got your money in good and in the long term you will win more than you lose, it was a +ev decision by far, hope they call my AA, with AK all day long, i'll be rich if they do. Also min raising AA/KK is a bad move, you get more people to see the flop, and if they hit, 2 pairs, trips you screwed, because people tends to overvalue their AA after the flop.

To be fair it is only the second time its ever happened to me, but I am down quite a bit this last few days so losing that amount is quite heart breaking but then I cracked his AK with my AQ a few hands after and so did someone against his AK vs AA again so karma and variance was restored.

G'day mate

I would disagree that the hands are wasted.
If people are all folding then you are at least winning the blinds and that is worth something.
You might not be getting anywhere near as much as you would like but if you are not losing anything but actually gaining even a little bit then you are farther ahead.
just my opinion.

I know but its annoying as the blinds are nothing. Sometimes they do raise me so I re-raise them but its not often.

Think I am going to stop trying to trap as just had KK and two Q's flopped. Lol doesnt matter though as I lost nothing really and I am doing well in getting my losses back.

5-10min only? Then you are really lucky with it. For idiot players (russians and similar) they are playing all in all the time, no matter how much time passed in tournament, 10 min 30 min hour 2 hours even 3 hours, they are still going all in no matter how much they have or how good are cards Thumbs Down

One of the problems with min raising preflop when you have AA or KK is that eventually people will catch on and it becomes a tell. Far better to have standard raise that you employ regardless of the strength of your cards. That is totally unreadable.

Just dont slowplay AA or KK, raise the normal 3 or4x preflop like you would any other time, hit set on flop then slowplay etc........No point letting someone in cheap preflop just for them to flop nuts etc.

I usually min raising AA, but I also min raising crap, or mediocre hands. I also over bet sometimes with the same hands - depends on the players I play against and what I did 'till that point and the way it worked.
For example - if I min raised and fold to a 3bet at least twice I will surely min raise an AA. If I min raised and pushed after the flop and it worked at least twice - I will min raise with an AA. If I stole some blinds with over betting I will probably over bet with the aces, etc.

Agreed, I over play hands when on tilt so that does not help. Back to the drawing board to try and improve my trapping (non) skills. Big Smile
