From time to time while playing poker with British people at the table, I have seen them call other people a "muppet". Growing up in the '70s, the muppets to me are loveable puppets who sing and dance and tell jokes. Last night in a SNG a British guy went off on a tirade against me after I shoved his button raises, and he called me a muppet several times. A couple of hands later he raises on me with QQ, sitting on bb with AA I reraise and he shoves - I call. AA holds up and I wrote in the chat box "muppet" and he again blew up!
So British BRM members, please tell me exactly what a muppet is.

It's just a general derogatory term for someone who's a bit of an idiot. Normally used for someone who's done something foolish, or silly rather than something that has caused anger.
I guess equivalent words would be "wally" "tit" "spaz"........ and so on

yeh mahdrof, its as yout85 says, its more of a London cockney thing,as in "shut it you muppet" it would have been easier for the muppet to write idiot, fewer letters and easier to understand, he must have been a right NUMPTY... have fun on the felts all.

Wouldnt get you banned on chat if u write idiot, though? I mean people writing synonyms all the time in fear from banning. At least I know I started using more elaborate words in trashtalks when I get banned on Unibet saying: c'mon sucker lick my battery!

lol. I can think of a lot worse things to be called than muppet. The definition by yout85 is spot on and I would say idiot is a fairly tame insult so muppet is really soft. But then it's really surprising how different people get offended by different words. For example "spaz" means a person with a disability so people who have disabled family members often get offended but at the same time I know disabled people who use the word themselves for humour. When I was growing up my mates would regularly call each other names like tw*t and c*nt so I became immune to those words, which some people find shocking. I know they are the worst swear words but sometimes I still jokingly call new friends a tw*t and I'm surprised when they are offended.

It tends to mean the same as idiot or donk. This term is used quite a lot on the poker tables and i have been called it quite a few times! The people doing the name calling are normally losing at the time and i wouldnt take any offence because it normally means you are winning when this happens
