I had position on him and he checked. I can check or raise, folding isn't an option.

Everything fine until the turn, no clue why anyone would argue the flatcall preflop. On the turn you shouldn't have raised. You don't really achieve much by doing this. You neither get value from many worse hands on this board, nor do you get many better hands to fold (in a $1 tourney people will almost always call this raise with a 9 or a J, and there are also quite a few draws out there). If you make plays always have a gameplan on why you do it and what you will do depending what villain does afterwards.
On the river it's an easy check behind because of reasons I already mentioned above.

So is he betting weak on the flop and the turn because he is chasing a draw or just betting like an idiot? Tbh, if someone was betting weak I would try and steal as well.

Why would you try to steal if you think the villain's range is weaker than your hand? Better call down the small bets and get extra value instead of trying to get weaker to fold. Sometimes he might catch up on the river being lucky, but overall you'll always show profit with that longterm.

Oh I had a plan on what to do, I was pretty sure I could make him fold. I was very confident of that.
That said, I had a nagging feeling I did it all wrong, this thread seems to have confirmed it.

And this is the crux of the problem.
I did think he was weak and I wanted him to fold.
But as you say, why would I want him to fold if I am ahead.

Indeed. That is probably why I lose out on more value then I should get in those positions, but I have a fear of draw chasers as they usual hit against me. Good advice though.

I just meant, we all need to put more thought into why we do things.
this isn't a bad beat thread, its a genuine hand (I have deliberately not given the result, results change people's opinions of a hand. if I had my way, posting the final result of a hand when asking for advice would be banned!

That's just a psychologic problem. It's a problem many players have. Our brain gets us more frustration about beats than excitement if we suck out on others, that's why we usually remember the times we get sucked out more often than the times we get lucky ourselves, then have a fear about receiving bad beats.
Sure it hurts getting bad beats, for me as well, but as long as we get beat by having done the ideal play, the way we play will always work out over the long run and gets us the most profit we can get.

^ That is probably half my problem with certain things.
I definitely agree with that Ice. I especially need to put more thought into what I am doing or what is going around me while I play. That and stupid mistakes as well.
Check is the best decision here. You have enough chips for the game, so don't take a risk, better try next time.
