10,000 hours of practice   0
Hello guys
Have you heard about the theories which have suggested that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become a master at something

Well, the results of a new study seems to contradict the 10,000 hour rule.

Depending on whether one classifies poker as a game, sport, or profession, for me not a sport not my profession so it´s a game that requires skills but still a game the percentage difference that playing 10,000 hours of poker has on one's performance ranges between 1% (if poker is a profession) and 26% (if poker is a game).

You can know how to do something, but when you practice it you will most likely to do it better than the first time. Of course there's a marginal point when you will realize you aren't doing it as well as you were used to, and that's called getting old. Enjoy life doing what most pleases you, and you will be compensate with the grace of doing it better and better, and when that stops happening, you know at least you will be doing it smarter and smarter, as you have learned with the experience that time gave you. Now, go ask admin to pass some extra mobpoints from your account to mine, i am not used to give such important life lessons as this for free Big Smile Big Smile Big Smile

Havent ever heard about it.
But doing right now the calculations its almost 417 days.

Sometimes you can practice way longer than that and not being able to achieve anything Smile
In some things you need to have it inside you. No one can achieve everything, no matter how
hard you want it.

Surely it depends on whether you learn from your mistakes. If you are doing something for the first hour and carry on doing the same for the next 9,999 hours then your ability will be exactly the same.
In the case of poker there are some very good, very young, very aggressive players who definitely have not played for long and there are some older guys who have played most of their life but have not moved with the times who would be easier to beat.
In poker I think knowledge can be a great thing but the reason why poker is so enjoyable is because your knowledge is worth sh*t if your aces get cracked by a set of 2s. Smile

Good luck mate somebody with 10k hours is more likely to be better at his job than one with a few hours but if you compare two people with same number of hours the one who made the most of the hours will most likely be the better man! So go for the 10k hours and may them be fruitful some of them will be lost but therefore you can go for more like 15k because of loss or unproductive hours that are bound to happens. Anyway nice post and i read it too, dealing with body language and reading people!

Then i guess you need to take the poker as a game in order for those 10.000 hours that you spend to give you the 26% improvement Smile

It's just statistics, many become very skilled very fast, others spend a lot more than 10.000 hours to become good at poker...

The 10 000 hour rule is complete bullsh!t. Do you need to spend 10 000 hours frying eggs to become a master? or 10 000 hours making coffee to nail it?

Conversely, you could spend 20 000 hours doing something without giving it your full attention and be no better than when you started.

All that said it probably applies to juggling or riding a unicycle. Big Smile

well since complete bullsh1t was mentioned in this thread (i have special piece of software donated to me directly from the white house which scans wordlwide forums for term "complete bullsh1t" ) i must reply here. 10,000 hour rule is fake- it was created with the only intention of showing players that they are complete morons (and generate ton of rake from them), good results only kick in after 11,000 hours

Also, I had masturbation worked out within 5 minutes. Smile

Or, as a more serious example, I can roll a perfect cigarette in total darkness or with my eyes closed and there is no way I've spent 10,000 hours rolling cigarettes.

Yes but that doesn't make you a master does it? Big Smile Big Smile Big Smile
Anyway that rule probably only applies for tasks on which theres no required "talent" to perform, like driving, typing, etc..

Artistic skills ( music and such)you might practice as many hours as you want but if they are not born with you, you'll never really be great at it imho.

10,000 hours of masturbation? yeah that should be enough to call one a master... i just wonder if jerking can be called an artistic skill or is it just one of those skills that one can acquire with time and extensive drilling sessions... maybe some courses or lectures are necessary?
