What's the difference between jail and prison in Germany?
Short-term and long-term?
I know that in the USA jails are usually run by sheriffs/local governments and are designed to hold individuals awaiting trial or a serving short sentences. Prisons are normally operated by state governments and the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and are designed to hold individuals convicted of crimes.
So, jails are locally-operated, short term facilities that hold inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both, and inmates sentenced to a term of less than 1 year, typically misdemeanants. Prisons are long term facilities run by the state or the federal government and typically hold felons and inmates with sentences of more than 1 year. Definitions may vary by state.
Anyway, very good to know that there is someone who did some time in a lockup facility. I thought I was the only one here.

Tony you have dangerous amount of knowledge about the prison system in the US of A... Makes me think that you are in Japan for doing some work to one the major yakuza gumis. They have their hands tied to gambling over there - so it all checks out (wink-wink). BTW every jail (or prison) have its own ecosystem, sometimes the games (cardgames) of the inmates is playing a huge part of this. You've got to kill time there somehow if you aren't allowed nor able to work.
