I read in the paper that if someone is making enought money in playing poker here in Canada he could be consider a self-employed and would have to pay income tax on his win. There is no tax if you win any kind of money in a loto or any luck game. But since poker is not only pure luck and need skill it could be taxable.

I germany we not pay income tax for poker is like any other gambling game like roulette,slots or lotto,but we must pay when we put in on the bank,and get small money for it that is on the bank,I don't know the right word for this in English,in Germany that calls Zinsen. But we have so many other fkn taxes,the dammed politics kill us,they only want more and more from us to get richer.Hope the all fkn politics die they work not for us only for the fkn lobby

i cant really believe how can they inforce tax to winning poker as their is no exact how much profit can a player win.but certainly if the goverment wanted a demand what should we do now??maybe its time to have a friend and transfer it from their account

yeah, here they don't care if you win the lotto or win big at poker or something else, all the same taxes. aldo it's doable if you pay out not to large amounts and at random, so there is no patern. for most of the time they want just like us, the big money

When you stop and think about it, it an area of finance, where governments can make huge amounts of money. It seems the focus here in UK is to tax it at the provider end of the spectrum, but it will only be a matter of time before the tax man comes knocking for a little bit from the rest of us.

Here in Portugal so far there no a tax but there will be soon because the goverment will be regulating the online gaming The other gaming wins have a tax os 20% over the 5000 euros up to that amount is tax free

This taxs that you are talking about is about the regulations that some and many country are trying to do, some countrys have good and nice situations with the tax or the regulations, others are trying to copy some terms, but the tax will be aply to evey single thing about gambling, not if is in the land - based casino. But like AV said here in portugal they talk about regulations to many years and this year the goverment decided to aply the regulation and tax the gambling games, like poker, but since the beginning of the year nothing been said to us about the %, and in the lotery and games like that is exist a tax of 20% above the 5000 euros, and if in the canada not exist is a good thing for now.

fcuk taxes, not taxis. oh and fcuk politics as well, just fcuk em.
the thing that makes me scratch my head is why no one want to share my losses with them... hello does someone want to compensate for my lousy performance at the tables? what about creating tax on those who do not play and share it with us degenerates at the hardest moment for us- when we're running low... after all once we win we will pay the income tax...

I suggest you keep records of all your poker losses so that you can offset them against any big wins you might have, im sure if your smart about it you can save yourself a fair bit of money.
anyways i live in england and dont have to worry about that so much.

It all depends in the amount we are talking about, in order to be considered professional. If you can keep it under the radar and have a good income then there is no problem. The first thing that came into my mind though, was all the poker pro's that have moved to canada after the US story. Maybe they are looking to another sort of "eviction" again

It appears in the Netherlands online poker is tax free, according to a ruling by the supreme court, as long as the site is inside the EU. If you did pay any taxes after 2008, you can get that back.
I was unaware of this, and felt somewhat uncomfortable about my earnings, and not paying taxes. To be more precise, the lack of comfort was about getting caught, not about not paying tax.
Even though Pokerstars.eu and FullTilt.eu are inside the EU, PS and FT themselves are on the Isle of Man, and may mean that both the EU as well as the regular sites, require you to pay tax.
Sites outside the EU require you to pay 29% tax over the net result (including wins, bonus, rakeback etc..., after subtraction of losses and buyins), each month. You can't compensate winnings in one month with losses in another.
