Happy 4th! Harper homers with USA bat

Nothing goes together quite like baseball and America. Don't believe us? Just ask Bryce Harper, who stepped to the plate during the Nats' July 4th matchup with the Giants rocking some highly patriotic lumber that we can only assume was harvested from a forest using nothing but freedom and was then transported to Nationals Park on the backs of bald eagles.

The Week Ahead: Nationals on a roll

The starters for the American and National League All-Star teams were announced on Sunday evening, and the rest of the rosters for the Midsummer Classic will be revealed on Monday. There will be much arguing, discussing, debating and debunking over the seven days of The Week Ahead in Major League Baseball.

Posey sits out with hamstring tightness

SAN FRANCISCO -- A tight right hamstring kept Buster Posey out of the lineup for the second game in a row Wednesday, but the catcher said that he expects to play Friday when the Giants open a three-game series against the Phillies.
The timing of Posey's rest coincides with Thursday's scheduled off-day, giving him additional opportunity to recover and prepare himself to return to action Friday. He said before Wednesday's series finale against the Mets that he would be available to pinch-hit if necessary.

Moustakas, Cueto maintain Final Vote leads
Dozier closes gap on Royals third baseman; Cards' Martinez passes Tulowitzki

It's still Johnny Cueto of the host Reds and Mike Moustakas of the Royals in the lead as of 8 a.m. ET on Thursday in the Esurance All-Star Game Final Vote, as fan balloting to determine the 34th and final roster spots for the 86th All-Star Game presented by T-Mobile, to be played Tuesday at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, already was near another record. Spurred by the annual team alliances now in full joint campaign mode, balloting passed the 70-million mark and is rapidly approaching the all-time record of 79.2 million votes set in 2013.

Sale leading top-of-the-line efforts by starters

CHICAGO -- How dominant has the White Sox pitching staff been over the last two weeks or so?
So strong that they don't even know how good they are.
Jonathan Herrera's pinch-hit double off of Chris Sale in the seventh inning of Saturday's 5-1 victory over the Cubs marked more than the first run scored by the North Siders in the two games at Wrigley Field. It also stood as the first run allowed by the White Sox over the past 30 innings, a streak that was their longest since tossing 27 straight in 2010 and a streak that seemed to surprise at least one party involved.

CINCINNATI -- Get used to seeing many of these names and players in a Major League ballpark -- some sooner than later. Several prospects represented themselves and their organizations well in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game as the U.S. Team rolled to a 10-1 victory over the World Team before an announced crowd of 43,661 fans at Great American Ball Park.
