Ex Liverpool star bankrupt, admits £1m betting losses   0
Dominic Matteo who played for Liverpool,Leeds,Blackburn and was a Scotland international was made bankrupt on July the 28th and this has now become public knowledge.Previously he has admitted losing at least a million on horse racing and has said he had bet sums of 100k on just one bet.
He was not a football star on 150k a week but he was earning 22k a week near the end of his career so he has earned millions and must be devastated to have the embarrassment of bankruptcy.
I feel little sympathy myself, for a multi millionaire to bet 100k on a horse priced at evens just sounds stupid,if he wants excitement from betting does betting like this really achieve that?

lmfao... another one in the long line of ex millionaires now busto dudes... seen plenty headlines over the time. and the geography is wide as well ranging from sportsmen to musicians and everything in between. hard to understand this really- is it so fcukin hard to dump your cash into some rental properties and spend your rent money for entertainment needs... or pile cash into some index tracking funds to save for retirement...

If not the horses then the goverment going to end his fortune - the british ridiculously overtax everything while spending a small country's GDP worth amount to social benefits.

I think generally these footballers and celebs have a way to avoid paying hardly any tax.We have had plenty of news stories about rich celebs only paying around 3% tax by playing the system.
Also the vast majority of social benefits goes to pensioners and working families who have to claim tax credits because the government allows companies to pay minimum tax on profits and pay staff minimum wages.

i hear these stories and i almost don't believe it
you got millions , you are set for life .. why go waste it on stupid stuff , don't you have a brain
i know gambling is a decease for some people
but come on , i only gamble with money that i don't need
besides he is a millionaire .. why putting so much money
you want an adrenaline rush .. go bungee jumping
anyhow i don't wish this to nobody so i hope he can get his act together and that he will bounce back up on his feet

As fan Liverpool fan I feel very sorry for him, he was such a hard work rate player, just too bad he did not go in coaching as it would have not find time to gamble and probably keep his money.

I feel no sorrow! There are hundreds of cases like this everyday. The only reason this makes the news is because he used to play for a few overrated teams and never really achieved a great deal...... Oh yes he did.... He made the headlines for squandering his savings!

Easy come - easy go.
I am not necessarily thinking he feels remorse too (barely any gambling addicts do tbh) but loosing a million pound is ridiculous. I mean after 100k he should've known already that he is totally $hitty as a punter - so there was no real reason to continue.

That's what happen when you have gambling problem and think that it's the easiest way to make money. I have an uncle who worked during his youth and had a very good wealth but due to gambling addiction went bankrupt too and his wife, children all left him.

That is why Allen Iverson made that special deal with Reebok (or Adidias? I cannot recall) where a huge amount of his cash from their famous endorsement deal going to be payed out years after his retirement as a monthly income. Honestly it's the most respinsible kind of deal any star athlete could ever had.
Too bad they are always going 4 the Lambo instead of the Toyota. Both cars would bring them to the same place but the latter would do it within reason.

the more i think about this, the more i believe that he is bankrupt only because he was a liverpool player... would be a totally different scenario if he was for example an ex deportivo wanka player. still no worries matteo dude- you'll never walk alone, there are lots more broke ex sportsmen who will walk with you to the bread store.
