PokerStars Pro against sunglasses in live tournaments

Daniel Negreanu, the canadian PokerStars Pro, writes in his latest blog post that a ban of sunglasses in live tournaments should be introduced. There are probably many reasons why Daniel (and many others?) thinks that sunglasses shouldn't be allowed in live tournaments. However, these are the main reasons he is mentioning in his blog.

-Sunglasses make it easier to see marked cards

-Live poker is a human game that is different from online poker, and one of the skill sets is the ability to read your opponents.

-The absence of sunglasses makes for a much better television production. No TV poker producer will argue that. The fans and viewers want to see the emotion that is often covered up by shades.

-Banning the use of sunglasses in competitive poker as well as made for TV events is completely fair for everyone. Not like allowing them isn't, but no one person can claim that this rule targets them specifically. Hiding your eyes is an advantage. By disallowing sunglasses, that advantage is taken away from every player involved creating a level playing field.

PokerStars Big Game is today one of few poker tournaments that doesn't allow sunglasses. The rule hasn't stopped people from participating in that tournament, so why not try it in other tournaments as well? Well, thats my personal opinion. What's your opinion on sunglasses in live poker tournaments?

I agree it would be better to watch, so put it to the TV Pros, but as for all tourns etc, nahh.
Wha else does he want, hands on the table no hoods or caps, no drinks that calm nerves or secret pot session b4 the game, no head phones etc etc
If he feels at a disadvantage then he can wear them too, simple solution.

I would suggest to rent thruth machine from FBI Smile

It's a fake problem, as for me. It's a part of the game, it's a show, because I think live poker is a show. I red dlkiv doesn't ever wear it like her sister Isabelle Mercier Smile Smile

Would help the pros and be a disadvantage for casual players. A pro can read his opponent better and in return can keep a poker face better than an amateur.''

not all pro's are experts on reading peoples faces/body language, the only reason shades should be aloud is if their too ugly for tv lol would you want to be playing someone online using an odds calculator etc.. ? no you would rather they dint have that advantage so tbh the same should apply to all poker, no1 should be aloud any advantage over anyone else...no matter how small
 psycokiller11/05/2010 03:45:21 GMT
Shades can be a disadvantage for the wearer as well. If he/she tries to be cool and wear mirrored lenses, an astute person has a pretty good chance of catching a glimpse of the wearers hole cards.

After baning sunglasses there must be next steps... Baning free-falling clothes, pullovers, jackets, etc. Why? It's hiding changes of breathing pattern. Long sleeves keep smelt of stress inside. Bracelets and rings with "mind effecting" stones and other extraordinaries - forbidden...
If one wins by watching into opponent's eyes why to play poker? Better go to bank pin the cashiers eyes with irresistible sight and.. go bux-impregnated.

Kidding a little bit. But just a little Smile)

i always thought it was a cardgame with mathematical expectations, not 'who is best reading people game'. Alot of pros are where they are, because they read people very well and so play the man not the card. Its for them a great advantage, and a disadvantage for people who are great at poker but not at reading.. so to equil those advantages i think sunglasses should be allowed..
 paulparadiis11/05/2010 11:34:44 GMT
I really hope that the sunglasses will be banned very soon. In my opinion it takes one of the interesting parts out of the game. And why make it less interesting? Club

it is infact a disadvantege for people how dont play live tourneys because the have not much practice so new players will only play online and not in real life.
and daniel u can read them with or without glasses so for you its no point at all.

 ZmxPowah11/05/2010 19:33:27 GMT
I also think it would make advantage of pros and it won't do any good...
There should be tournaments with sunglasses allowed and some with not for sure not every of them.
 corners11/05/2010 19:36:25 GMT
ok now we see more gamers with black eye on the tv Smile

if he is a pro he has to manage it either ways..
 MOAR12/05/2010 16:38:36 GMT
It'd definitely give the people who have been playing live poker for years a big edge. I think, it's a good idea.
 leroi2112/05/2010 19:06:51 GMT
yeah if we ban sunglassed the games will be more interresting because guys like daniel gonna be better cause their are going to make more crazy read like only daniel can do
 xxxbchxxx12/05/2010 22:01:34 GMT
i suppose its a good rule for the pros that have spent many years perfecting the ability to be void of all emotion.
It would not work to level the field any only to give the pros an advantage.
So i say no to banning them as it levels the field and make for a better game with the pros stretched to there limit.
Pros winning all the time will get boring for sure.
Let the little man on the street have a shot at the pot.
 crazyjas13/05/2010 16:29:59 GMT
in big local games I usually wear the sunglasses as I have a problem in hiding some of my emotions Aww crap! it's a part of my game i need to improve if i want to b more successfull in my live tournaments Blink
 Alelkz1614/05/2010 04:38:38 GMT
It would be intersting to see the result of that as a new rule
 aicii15/05/2010 11:50:44 GMT
In my opinion brm should make a poll regarding this sunglas issue Tongue
 leolook19/05/2010 19:08:23 GMT
In my opinion the sunglasses should be banned. Players who use hidden emotions and thus can benefit. If everyone played without sunglasses poker would become even more competitive in live tournaments
 teteban19/05/2010 19:37:03 GMT
maybe he has a point, I'm not really sure about that. But what of players that have a habit of hiding any expression in key hands? Namely, what about Phil Laak and his "hey, I'm gonna burrow in my parka now" style?
 SuperNoob04/06/2010 05:02:26 GMT
i dont think its tht big issue and he alone cant change it the way he wants.
its upto the organising committee to decide whats allowed ad what isnt.if they ban glasses, they should lot of other things too
 youngbaboon04/06/2010 08:14:12 GMT
I agree 100%. Sunglasses take away part of the fun of poker too. The eyes never lie
 NaziPal05/06/2010 07:13:00 GMT
I'm not really sure about this one, but it is true that hiding the eyes is a huge ADvantage, especially for advanced players. Ironically tho, the more advanced you are, the better yo should be able to play and thus the more you shouldnt need your sunglasses....
