Poker Pro arrested for murder & dismemberment

Tags: dismemberment, murder, Pianchai Wanphen, poker pro, Ron Fanelli, thailand.
Posted on 29 July 2010 by "T".

Ron Fanelli made a living from poker during the first half of 2000 and became a well known face on the TV channel Poker Channels program, mostly thanks to the british journalist and poker player Victoria Coren, one of the channel's hosts. Ron Fanelli moved to Thailand in 2006 and quickly got married and had a kid with his wife. A few years later, his wife left him to the other side of the country and took their kid with her. After this, things started going really bad for Fanelli as he started sleeping with prostitutes and drink lots of alcohol frequently.

Pianchai Wanphen, a prostitute, was murdered on June 18 this year and Ron Fanelli quickly became one of the main suspect. The police managed to track down Fanelli after some search. He admitted what he had done after that the police presented technical proof such as a stiletto. According to the police, Ron Fanelli was drunk when he murdered Pianchai Wanphen and therefore can't explain why he did it. However, he had done a lot to get away with the murder. He had been cutting up the body into pieces and then put them in a suitcase, which he dumped at a deserted place in hope that no one would find it or be able to link him to the murder.

At first, Victoria Coren thought that the police had forced him to admit to the murder and that he was innocent. However, she changed her opinion about that when the police presented technical proof against him.

"When I first heard that Ron had been arrested in Thailand for the brutal stabbing of Wanphen Pienjai, an employee of the Sweetheart Bar in Phuket, I assumed he had been fitted up. I was terrified for him. I automatically supposed that this had been a scandalous murder, there was pressure on local police to make an arrest and what better scapegoat than a noisy American immigrant who visited prostitutes? A good one to lock up, close the files and draw a line under the case."

She continues...

"When I heard he had confessed, I thought he must have been coerced into it. I knew he'd been offered a sick deal whereby he would be executed if found guilty, unless he confessed and accepted life imprisonment. If I were offered something like that in Thailand, I thought, I would probably confess to anything. And then I would sit in jail and wait to be rescued. There is no way this man, whom I knew and liked, had actually done it.
But then the police found the knife in Ron's house. He gave them the shorts he was wearing at the time of the murder. They took away his mattress. He pleaded that he had been drunk at the time. He said it was an accident. He explained how he had put Wanphen's dismembered remains into a suitcase, balanced it on the front of his motorbike, and ridden off to dump the poor, lost girl along the Chao Fa Thani road
." writes Victoria Coren in an article in the british newspaper The Observer."

WOW, man who got it all flushed his life. Well Played Ron Thumbs Up.
Perfect example why you cant help just any ramdom guy up to his feet.

Dozn - A foreigner will get atleast 10-30 years for selling less than 10 pills in Thay if they get caught in action. Now think what they will do incase of murder. I guess no online poker for life lol.

Gosh, what a f*cking sicko, drunk or not thats definetely not an excuse. I mean, this guy must have something wrong inside him to kill a prostitute, wether he s drunk or not, desperate or not. Tons of people have problems with their lifes, thats not why they murder people... And what he does after (cutting the body in pieces, putting it in a suitcase, and dumping it at a deserted place) is really sick.
Not a big loss for society.... (Im obviously talking about him being in jail, not of the prostitute being dead)

Now he'll be playing poker in jail, for cigarettes

Big Smile

Seems to ba at least one story of some poker player being charged with murder every year.

Madness! I wish the article would've elaborated on why his wife left with their kid, maybe that would give more insight into why he flipped and murdered a prostitute. I know if I could make a fortune in poker, I'd stay in America, date the hottest women (only casually, never marry), and most importantly, CHILL DA PHUCK OUT Cool (never an option in this stupid paper-chasing, reason-abusing, capitalist society).

Unfortunately, yes, you gotta play the game and move through the system, but if one succeeds, unlike this guy, it's best to stay as far away from the hedonistic indulgences as possible. He probably got done banging the whore and then had some sort of existential breakdown . . . Aww crap! LOLSMH

When I read the headline I thought: No! Fuck! What did I do last night? But it seems as I was not involved in this, and I am very grateful and happy for that.

It's vacation; I will now open another beer and avoid stabbing a prostitute.

When I read these kinds of things, I´m always wondering.... so what´s the link with Poker?

Am i in any danger if I keep playing this game and get famous?
If I eventually lose it all, will I start drinking and resort to mindless violence? Confused

Seems this guy is just mentally ill, and his wife leaving him has more to do with it than anything else.
As to the drinking thing, pffff, a lot of people drink. they don´t kill because of it.
Unless they´re better at hiding the bodies.... Question
 tomboogy16/08/2010 11:46:19 GMT
I guess the girl gave him too many bad beats....so there should be a lesson in this, I don't know what that is right now, but feel free to fill the blanks...
- don't drink and drive a motorcycle
- don't drink and stab
- buy a lighter shovel so you don't get tired too fast and can't dig a deep enough hole to hide the body
