A high court in the state of North Gauteng, South Africa has in a sentence come to the conclusion that all types of online games with money involved are forbidden. The decision will take affect immediately all over South Africa. The new law means, for example, that's is no longer possible for anyone in South Africa to play poker or organize poker tournaments online.
People who break against the new law will get huge fines and also risk time behind bars. The max penalty, however, is a R10 million fine and up to 10 years in jail, or both.
Please write your personal thoughts on the ban of online gambling in South Africa. We are also interested to hear from people who live in countries (Thailand, USA, Dubai, Japan etc) where it's not allowed to play for money online.

Posted by Supererou: WTF...Idiot decision. Governments must think that online poker can be a good source of money for them on this time of economical crysis so why ban it when you too can make profits from it? I can not understand this kind of decisions...
------------ I mean why don't they put some kind of taxes instead of banning it forever?Like when a player wants to cashout a very little percent of the sum he wants to cashout would go to tha state as an imposit or something.Maybe I am saying bullshit here but I simply dont understand this decision. |
is any1 here a resident at south africa? i guess they're the one's that should make a reaction....

Yeah now that you said it I really think it wasn't necessary. There can't be anyone who agrees to that except for the ones who decided it. |
And just to prove I was wrong two people has voted yes! |
Yeah those two must be economic experts or something like that. |
He he... I do belive so....

Hi
Stupid decision! The goverment isnt getting a cut of the action, maybe thats why they did it,watch the goverment will have their own online soon so they can benefit from the profits.. In canada,b.c. the goverment started their own online gambling business because they knew they were losing $$ to offshore gambling,we are having poker soon too.

I'm from South Africa and this effects me directly. Sick thing is that in some occasions murderers and rapists dont even get such a hefty jail sentence. SA needs to sort out other shit before they start targeting people who gamble for recreational purposes.

Any idea then why they decided this? I don´t really see any explanation in the article.
And to those guys talking about 10%, even 0.1% tax, try living in Belgium. Once they get it regulated, and they´re working on it, it´ll be more like 40% here. No joke on that!
