Poker pro sentenced to 14 years in prison

David Saab, 30, had huge problems with his economy when he decided to play poker for a living back in 2005. It only took 3 years before he had made hundreds of thousands dollars from poker and lived a luxurious life at different casinos around the globe. The biggest cash in his poker career came at the 2008 Asia Poker Tour when he took home the Main Event for $280,000.

But everything came to an end in January this year when he was arrested by the police for importing cocaine. Saab, together with 2 companions, had tried to smuggle 14.6 kilos of cocaine to Melbourne, Australia. According to the judge, David Saab was the master mind and he would have made some serious cash if they hadn't been caught. Saad, who was born in South Korea but been living in Australia for many years, therefore got a 14-year sentence, while his 2 companions got away with "only" 8 years each.

Drugs destroyed a lot of lives all around the world and i think all sentences for drug selling are very well deserved...

Here i don't think we should really mix the image of the poker game with this illegal actions Thumbs Down

This guy may be good at poker but he deerves the sentence for what he did.

True that cocaine is very bad, but worths a lot. So even if he doesn't do drugs it would've definetly payed good ^^

He should've stuck to playing poker atleast it's not totally illegal Big Smile Blink

Yeah. all drugs here are like that.. I don't take them any more, but I can tell you, pills (ecstasy) are around $25 these days, used to be $35-$40 a few years back, meth is any where from $500-$1000 a gram these days, pot is around $250 /ounce (single grams about $15-$20) - everything here is hyper expensive.. Only LOL is New Zealand is even more expensive Big Smile

So yes ~15kg of coke is definitely a few mil over here if sold right.

So that would mean $ 35 - $ 40 for a gram of coke, B1gfoot ??? I have yet to find that place in the U.K. In fact never heard of it for that kinda price. Where is this place.....?

he probably means if you sold the whole lot in bulk; one sale.

Although, interestingly, the way they work out the "street price" of drugs is total BS to create big media stories. It is generally like this:

let's say you have 1kg of coke and it get sold like this

4 * 250g @ $20,000 ea (total $80K)

then each of those packets are sold on:

20 * 50g at $5k ea ($100K)

then

1000 * 1g at $200 ea ( $200K)

They would then say the street price is:

80K + 100K + 200K

== $380K

Even though the original quantity only sold for $80K and even by selling it at its smallest quantity size it only netted $200K, somehow, magically, the street price is then rounded up to say $400K. And that is how its worked out.

No around $70-$80, or £40-50 , street not bulk, I must admit I am yet to find that place in the UK that will take $
But if you are searching for coke, why not go to Colombia, you could pick it up for as low as $2 a gram, at that price you can sprinkle it on your cornflakes.

Thing is going to a place like Colombia, even Mexico for that matter, there would be PLENTY of shall we call them 'sharks' waiting for the white 'fish' to come with his money and be plenty happy to separate one from the other and not necessarily by providing any substance either..

I think there are local prices in countries like that for people who live there, but I doubt tourists are likely to pick up grams for $2 without connections, fact is people would KNOW that white tourists are used to paying more and are prepared to pay more too.

Besides getting caught, the opposite is probably more likely true of being able to arrange something like this.
 B1gfoot15/09/2011 11:17:30 GMT
Well I would like to agree, as most people who do this are fairly bright people and very well organised, but he is a sucker, he hires a van in HIS name to collect the shipment HIMSELF then opens the parcels HIMSELF before being arrested(the shipment was swapped on-ruote by the cops).
Now if I was to organise an 8 million operation guess who wont be there.

Didn't know that details. That does seem pretty silly of him.

Maybe I have seen too many movies, but it almost, _almost_, seems lika a happy amateur that thinks he has found a brilliant business oppurtunity. The kingpin hears the word on the street, and contacts his crooked cop connection (or just tips them of with an anonymous call), and the dude gets caught.

The cops get credit and the kingpins business goes on as usual.

As I wrote, I _have_ seen a lot of movies...
