Washington State Shuts Down Senior Center's Card Game For Pennies

KING 5 News reported on Tuesday evening that the state of Washington had busted a 25-year-old penny-ante pinochle game at a senior center in Snohomish, a city in northwest Washington with a population of about 9,000.

It all started 5 years ago when the city of Snohomish passed a law to keep for-profit gambling rooms from opening in the city and (somehow) the non-profit card games at The Snohomish Senior Center came up on Washington's Gambling Commission's radar. The games went on, though, and it took a long time before they eventually were shut down last year.

"If you gave them an IQ test, the needle wouldn't move," one of the players said of state officials.

Another one added: "We should turn the card rooms into grow rooms for marijuana. Then we would be legal and make some money. Maybe we could have free lunch!"

How petty the authorities can be at times. What harm is this game doing to anybody? Leave them play and the authorities should concentrate on other more worthwhile things to do

It's just a penny and I don't see why they shut it down, it might have to do with uniformity everywhere but common, they playing for fun and not that big money. And they are senior people sad, but think they will play with chips now!

These dangerous 'high roller' criminals truly participate in some 'shakey' gambling racket so the state did only what they could. Agree
Its truly fantastic that they legalize marijuana and strike down on these 'mobsters' on the same year.
Freedom, America, f**kyeah!!!
No real wall street banker who caused the meltdown in 2008 got any prison time but these authorities always on the edge when its about the money the IRS didnt have their hands on.
Its a shame.

G'day mates

Leave it to scum bag politicians and government law enforcement officials to harass senior citizens for playing cards.
Heaven forbid they spend their time trying to stop real criminals.
What a bunch of crap.
They wonder why people hate them so much.
Leave the old folks alone you dirt bags.

I totally agree what that player told about state officials and their IQ.

I wonder when they will learn that the deep economical s*** they are in is not related to the fact that online gambling and some senior poker centers do not play taxes.

i also think they should lock them up for next 20-40 years. just to scare bigger fishes away.

that way people woudlnt dare to play for peanuts anymore, and higher stakes games would flourish, because apparently those arent as important as penny games.

also, nsa should spy on them to make sure they dont repeat such a serious crime again.

If only all states could stop penny gambling, this would would much a better place to live, i would feel safer knowing theres nobody playing illegal penny games.

The NSA and the IRS and the FBI and the Mickey Mouse Club all should go after these dangerous criminals. They should strike down with all their legal and political power to try to stop these 'mobsters'...
The funny thing though, that if they would do this in a native american reservation the same goddamn laws would protect their games. But they are elderly, they are easy to f**k with.
Still doesnt understand how come bingo nights is allowed but penny card games is forbidden.

Someone looks like a bunch of ass-clowns...

Things like this are laughable. Seriously. They are hardly the problem. Let them have fun, what the hell else are they going to do??

I mean they must be putting one heck of a dent in the taxes by 'evading' it with such big money stakes.
