Player’s Accessories outlawed in latest Matt Savage Social Experiment Event

Matt SavageMatt Savage is well known in the world of poker as a very excellent tournament director. His latest creation of a tournament schedule for his home casino, the Commerce Casino located in Los Angeles, has definitely riled up some players in the poker community.

He announced the Social Experiment event as part of the California State Poker Championship. In this particular event, players will not be allowed to have electronic devices, headphones, or wear sunglasses or hoodies in order to "create social interaction amongst players." Of course, hearing aids and other items needed for medical reasons will not be banned. If you have a guide dog, it is also allowed. Hats are allowed. You can wear scarves, or a hooded jacket but not the hood - just do not use any item to cover your face.

The tournament starts on April 29, Saturday at the Commerce Casino for a $350 buy-in. The so-called Social Experiment has surely gotten the attention of many players. With a 30,000-chip starting stack, equal to what players start major WSOP or WPT events with, along with a sweet $100,000 guaranteed prize pool, this experiment gives players a shot for the big reward with just a rather minimal investment.

While some players like it, others aren't too fond of the rules.

Brandon McPherson hated it and expressed on his Twitter feed, "This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. Not only pointless but counter to what the community wants."
Joe Patterson thought differently and said, "That's awesome. You are going to take a lot of people out their game, for sure, love it."

To make sure everyone follows the policy, Savage has come up with a series of penalties for rule breakers. Starting with a three-hand banishment, the penalties go up to one rotation around the table for repeat offenders. Such punishment at the wrong time while in the tournament can be devastating to the chip stack of a player.

What do you think? Is the Social Experiment Tournament a great idea?

I don't think thus is good idea, dome people like social things, to talk to other players to get attention be in the centre of things, but some people hate it and want just to play, concentrate on their game, how to play hands, count in their heads, so some will not like it.

didnt pokerstars do this for one game,,,or was it announced at pokerstars panama? either way they said it was more about opening the game up to new people - 'non pros'...you go to your first big tournament and your completely shut off, everyone has heads down playing on phones/covered faces/sunglasses and so you dont really have a good time - and the recreational players are the ones that juice the stakes so keep them happy and everyone wins. plus i hate during the wsop or main tables when they go talk to the rail everyhand....thats practically collusion since the rail isnt allowed to talk to you at the table kind of thing .

anyway I dont know why some are complaining - were they even going to be playing in this event? and the idea is great especially considering the idea that hes trying to open poker up instead of it shutting people out

Dog-guide allowed ?? ... I understand that this is a poker game for blind people ?? .... more stupid rule, I have not heard ... people for some reason are trying to introduce new rules and think that this is someone you need .... auditory Devices with vy-fie and communication with other people are also allowed? ... interesting
 pochui07/04/2017 18:41:32 GMT
i dunno, this is not all white or all black idea, but i generally don't like when something is enforced by the rules you must obey or someone is going to snap off your balls if you decide to go on your own... i have nothing against the idea as a whole, but it would be better if they just encourage people to open up, talk about it more etc. rather than just say "you must do it, or else..."

And where exactly is the experiment here.
All i see is restrictions in the game.
Restrictions that can make it interesting.
For example some are wearing the sunglasses to protect them from giving away
signs with their eyes. Now they wont be able to do that if they choose to participate Blink

About the glasses that hide the eyes ..... there is a difficult moment ... some people can play with a stone expression of the face and eyes, no matter what, and some people mimic their eyes and give out their courts to attentive players ... on the internet of course It's easier because no one sees you, and then there is such a lot of stress

So if I am not allowed tonwear glasses to mask my eyes, maybe i can cober my eys with my hand and look through my fingers, this would be funny tournament if many players would do this, very social tournament I think Smile or maybe cover eyes with cards?
 pochui08/04/2017 20:05:14 GMT
so what if i am a shy dude, and just like Mober mentions i am forced to take of my pilot sunglasses:

maybe in such case i am at least allowed to wear a helmet:

Honestly open up about what? Half of these players are barely functioning autists the rest are just your addict gamblers anyway...

I think that this is a very good move and it will be interesting to see how it works. There are far too many players wearing sunglasses and hoodies and this negates the ability to read players

Social Experiment? I don't get this aspect of this set of rules. It's just a gimmick to get some media attention for this little game. As it's in the US, maybe a few rules like, NO GUNS, or NO BURGERS would be a more controversial restriction. As it stands, all the guy is trying to do is stop people hiding and being seen for who they are! Hang on a minute..... if they choose to hide, isn't that who they are?????????

Yeah I am not sure either that missing glasses or a hoodie here or there will make you go into banters with the other players to be honest.
 pochui10/04/2017 08:04:09 GMT
well yeah, like bowie said in one of his posts, i am also not too sure the about the positives of this mass opening up with your table neighbours thing, all that this will lead to is a very intellectual conversation like: "how much did you lose yesterday", "can you lend me $100, i will pay you back tomorrow" etc.

G'day mate

Well these new rule are total BS!
Who gives a @$#@ if some guy wants to ware sunglasses to cover his eyes.
I mean my god I have been playing poker for almost 40 years and there has always been people who tried to hide their eyes.
It has always been a parts of the games.
Players who are antisocial are not going to suddenly start talking just because some dumbarse make them remove the hoods and sunglasses.
I would love to see all the top players ban together just once and say " screw you and your stupid rules, we are all going to boycott your dumb tournament you idiot"!

it will never happen though since players simply will not work together even when it is in their own best interest.

be cool

the buyin would suggest not many pros would be going anyway unless they are doing a charity thing or sentimental in terms of once winning this

G'day mates

Robbo1990 you are probably correct.
It still saddens me to see all these so-called tournament planners constantly screwing around with the rules.
I say just piss off and let us play poker.
Who wants to constantly sit down every other tournament an say
"What are the rule in this one? and can I make them work for me?"

just my opinion

Big Smile Big Smile Big Smile Big Smile Big Smile Big Smile Big Smile
 pochui11/04/2017 11:49:36 GMT
well actually i am not really pissed off at those tournament directors who as ronin mentions "screwing around with the rules" i don't give a sh1t really, obviously because i don't play live tourneys at all since i am too broke for them and the not allow drinking vodka at the tables, but even if i was into them, i mean you are not forced to play this particular no glasses-no shaved arses tourney, you can pick whatever you want...
 pothead201217/04/2017 04:23:52 GMT
I like the idea let's see how it turns out i bet lots of young online Players who take part in this will have a lot of tells all over theyr faces would also be nice if the tournament is televised would love to watch it at least they're not making people dress in suits just to play cards like most of the Casinos here in Germany
 Wo17/04/2017 09:56:33 GMT
I think that the tournament organizers are just trying some new things to see what works and what doesn't. There is a lot of competition in this area, many tournaments on offer any time, so organizers want and probably have to differentiate from the pack to see good results

Yeah, but if this gets some traction I can honestly see other organizers following it and God knows what comes after that. I really dont want to see all those ugly people.
