On July 9, Sunday was a memorable day for Australian Heidi May, who won 2017 WSOP's Event #70: Ladies No-Limit Hold'em Championship $10,000 Buy-in (Ladies Discount to $1,000 Buy-in), a 3-day event which started on July 7, Friday at 11am.
The event drew a player field of 718, building a prize pool of $654,300.
Within just 3 hours and 124 hands on Sunday, 24-year-old Heidi May bested all her opponents in the event, winning her first ever WSOP gold bracelet and a grand prize of $135,098!
So far this was May's biggest live tournament cash win, as she is mainly a cash game player in her home country Australia. Her prior top tournament score was for $18,714, when she finished 617 in last year's WSOP Main Event. It was also at last year's WSOP that she made her first appearance.
May returned in the third and last day of this event as the chip leader, with a total of five players left. United Kingdom's Deborah Worley-Roberts started strong, winning a key pot against May. She then beat Julie Dang (4th place, $40,843) to further increase her lead.
Pretty soon, May was able to snatch back the lead from Worley-Roberts. May increased her lead after forcing Jana De La Cerra to settle in third place ($57,930), taking a 5-to-2 advantage into heads-up match.
In the end, May emerged victorious.
May is the second female from Australia to ever win a WSOP gold bracelet, following Jackie Glazer. May learned to play poker while attending university. Almost four years ago, after working in the field of senior and disability care, May decided to become a high-stakes online cash game poker pro.
