A total of 7,874 players jumped into Event #65 $10,000 NLHE Main Event World Championship, and now only 109 players remain as Day 5 ended in a rather peculiar way. Day 5's chip stack hero is Houston resident Michael Dyer with 12,180,000.
As a result of a thunderstorm, the first serious rainfall of the summer accompanied by howling winds, the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino's Amazon room experienced a power outage that occurred late Monday evening. Emergency lights were used about an hour before players were scheduled to bag and call it a day. Even if there was some light made available, the tournament director decided that the best thing to do is to stop action for the evening and send the surviving players home.
The remaining 109 players are now guaranteed a $57,010 payday at the least; however, their eyes are definitely pinpointed on the championship bracelet and of course the $8.8 million top prize money.
Michael Dyer has more than $130,000 in previous live tournament winnings so far, including a final table finish in a WSOP $2,000 NLHE event for $65,905 back in 2009.
There are still many notable players left with a good shot at becoming this year's poker world champion. Three-time bracelet winner Brian Yoon took the 2nd spot in the leaderboards with 8,395,000 chips advancing to Day 6.
Frenchman Benjamin Pollak finished Day 5 with 5,715,000 chips. Pollak, who finished 3rd place in the 2017 WSOP Main Event for $3.5 million is aiming to add more to his $8,866,323 in career earnings with this year's deep run on the same event.

Joe Cada, 2009 WSOP Main Event champ and three-time bracelet winner, is the only player left in the field who has a chance to take down this tournament for the second time around. He ended Day 5 with 2,965,000 chips.
A total of 301 female players entered this year's Main Event, and now only one is left standing. Kelly Minkin is the ‘last woman standing' for the second time. She had previously earned this recognition in 2015 when she finished 29th in the Main Event for $211,821. Minkin was at the chip lead position at some point during this day, but ended up with 1,205,000 when play was stopped for the night.
There were a total of 201 players eliminated on Day 5, and that included 2016 Main Event 3rd placer and two-time bracelet winner Cliff Josephy. Also known as ‘JonnyBax', Josephy shoved his last chips in with pocket kings against Michael Dyer's A-K of clubs. The ace on the river made Dyer soar into the chip lead, while Josephy was eliminated in 123rd place with $57,010.
