Posted on 16 January 2014 by "T".

In the past few days there have been rumours of a $1 million buy-in tournament with a $50,000,000 first prize on March 30th, 2014, at The Star Hotel and Casino in Sydney, Australia. David Chen, the tournament director behind the alleged high roller tournament, claims that 48 players have enrolled already, including members of the British, Danish and Monaco royal familys who have been selected as ambassadors, Hollywood stars and poker professionals.

"Poker is a true game that cuts across all class and income barriers. It tests skills, nerves and courage in a way that's incomparable to other card games. There is no higher drama and examination of character than a high stakes poker game. With a splashing $50m prize, in the remarkable city of Sydney, this should be a historical event indeed," said Chen in a press release (according to the news site and tracking site highstakesdb).

Most Embarrassing Moment at the 2012 WSOP?

Posted on 10 October 2012 by "K".

When about 50 players remained in the 2012 WSOP Main Event, Aussie David Balkin ended up in a heads-up duel against Gaelle Baumann from France. Before the river card had been dealt, Balkin had about 75% chance of taking home the pot with three of a kind 10s against Baumann's AJ (flush draw and straight draw). The river card gave Baumann the nut flush and Balkin moved all-in almost straight away. Baumann snapped called. Balkin took a quick look at Baumann's cards before heading to his friends in the crowd and celebrated. But in a matter of seconds someone said "You lost, bro!!" and Balkin realized his big mistake.

Last Sunday, after 3 days of play, the opening event ($1,000 NLH) of Aussie Millions got a winner, Brendon Rubie (a well-known figure in the land down under thanks to several cashes in major poker tournaments). Rubie played very well on the final table and had a 2-1 chip lead when heads-up began. His opponent, Scott Wilson, fought really well though and didn't give away any chips for free. After some time of fighting back and forth, Rubie managed to get Wilson to believe that he was weak in a hand that he had flopped 2 pairs. After Wilson made the call on the river and mucked his hand, Rubie went up to his friends and started celebrating.

Man drank 42 beers - at the poker table!

Tags: australia, beer, Star City Casino, sydney
Posted on 06 January 2011 by "K".

During new year's eve a man walked into the Star City Casino in Sydney, Australia. While he was playing poker, he ordered beer after beer. 17 hours later, one of casino employees realized that they had served 1 person 42 beers. The man, who had drank 42 beers, couldn't walk on his own, so the casino personnel had to help him out of the casino.

The casino has now received a fine of 10,000 AUD because they let an obviously drunk person play poker. The bartender in charge that night was fired shortly after - along with 2 other casino employees. Apart from firing 3 employees, the Star City Casino has contacted the authorities and newspapers and told them that the man lured its employees with his poker skills.

Julian Cohen wins ANZOT Queenstown

Tags: ANZOT Queenstown, australia, Julian Cohen, new zeeland, pokerstars
Posted on 26 July 2010 by "T".

It ended up being Julian Cohen and Andew Watson who were the last 2 men standing in ANZOT (Australia New Zeeland Poker Tour) Queenstown. Andrew Watson had a 3-1 chip lead and most people had already counted out Cohen for the win. But somehow Cohen managed to keep a cool head and play his very best game, even though the difference between first and second prize was quite big.

Cohen managed to fight his way back into the game and overtake the chip lead. When he had the lead he also had full control over the game and could basically do whatever he wanted to. It didn't take long before he knocked out Watson and grabbed the first place prize of 73,630 AUD. This is Cohen's biggest cash ever in his poker career but hopefully not the last as he's a very talented player whose just at the starting blocks of his poker career.

Ziigmund played poker drunk and lost big

Posted on 02 February 2010 by "T".

To drink alcohol and play poker at the same time is probably nothing a single serious poker player in the whole world would recommend. Probably not even Ilari "ziigmund " sahamies, 26. However, he still did so last weekend.

In one his latest blog posts, he writes that he played "totally f drunk" and lost $500,000, then another $300,000 when he woke up with a hangover the day after. After that, he decided to try his luck betting on tennis. No luck there either and he lost another $130,000. Even though he lost so much money, he's still up about $20,000 on his holiday trip to Australia.

From ziigmund's blog
"so sick.I lost yesterday totally f drunk 500k....then I woke up and lost in totally hangover 300k more....then we went to watch tennis to Red Label arena or whatever and I lost 130k more to Justine Henin....Im up now 20k on my holidaytrip...whatever...now I start to play TIGHT."

Posted on 21 September 2009 by "T".

A new TV show called "The Poker Star" was introduced by PokerStars a while ago. The show will be quite similar to the very popular "POP IDOL" where talented and not so talented musicians get to perform in front of a jury with the chance of winning a contract with a big record label. However, PokerStars are not interested in Musicians, but instead in talented poker players. The winner of "The Poker Star" will get $100,000 in prize money and also a sponsorship contract with PokerStars which includes free buy-ins to a load of WPT events.

Around 18,000 people have applied to be in PokerStars new TV show. Among them you will find everything from old and experienced players to beginners with lots of self-confidence. The most of the people that get to be in the show will be handpicked by no one else than Joe Hachem (2005 WSOP Champ). Joe Hachem, will also be the one who trains the winner of the TV-show.

The show has premier next Saturday in Australian television.
