have the old people lost the skill to younger players?

I think poker used to be seen as a 'old mans' game, something you did as you hit 50 + now as i look round the forum many people are in the same age group as me wich i like because you dont get the doyle brunson talk at a table.
I think that now more people are attracted to poker from the age of 18 but why?

It is much easier for the young ones to have a game online. They can play for less money. And when they think they are good, they can start to play live.

It's true that now poker is a "all age" game. Use to be for old man, but Online poker, TV coverage, and a really strong publicity campaign have contribuited to expand the game.
If we add the posibility to make some profit, poker becomes pretty interesting for young people who don't have a job and want to win money "easy". If you couldn't be a football player, poker is your second choice haha.
Young peple have despoble money......( Thay don't have famly commitements if thay are senceable while thay are young) and thay are more helf conchenche than my age group so thay don't spend all there money on drink and ciggerets.
So addvertising have to get them to spend it some where.

I started playing poker before i was 18. It was never something that appealed to me but me and my friends joined a game one new years eve and it was great. From then on we played in school during our free periods and dinner hour. And from I've heard we started something because my sister who's two years younger than me has told me that poker is still the number one activity of the form six common room. Despite the efforts of the head of year I might add.
I think it has a lot to do with the growth of texas hold em and the fact that poker appears more and more on television. My grandfather played five card draw, which is really an old man's come. Hold em has more skill, more mathematical influence and allows for more variance in style, which encourages young people to come up with new techniques and of course is much more exciting to follow.
I agree that the popularity of online poker has helped but I don't think that casinos are strictly older places. The image of a casino being a rich mans posh club is beginning to change.

there are indeed a lot more younger than (older) players at this moment , this has manny reasons , first off all >>> poker was never before so promoted as in the past years , secondly >>> easy acces for the younger ones ( free bankrolls , paysafecards ) , third reason >>> if you are lucky and have skill enough you can make a lot of money from a little investment and so on ........

My son think he can play poker and he tell me he has played from his friends house at the weekend ..he is only 13. Im not sure if this is a good thing or not i know he doesnt play for real money but if i encourage him to play for fun cash would be the naturel progression.
TV and online gaming probably helped this quite a bit. If you play online you can play holdem for as low as $.01/.02 and go up from there. You can also go to a casino and play for pennies, nickles, dimes, etc. But younger people don't have the commitments that older people have like dunotra stated. I don't know how it works over here, but back in the states if you are gambling on any table/machine at any stake you were allowed to drink for free on the house. So people would gamble and party at the sametime. Plus the casinos back in the states are very entertaining. Live bands, night clubs, hot chicks dancing with little close on, you get the idea

when i was that age i used to play cards with my grandmother for pennies. It didn't make me want to play for more money. We played new market, sevens and bonk cos they were the games my gran knew how to play. you might know them by different names. Anyway i don't see why playing poker for fun is any different from playing other card games. You could gamble playing snap if you wanted to. I have played plenty of card games like blackjack, switch, chase the ace, rummy without the thought of money crossing my mind.

To tie my previous post to the rest of the topic though; I don't think that there has necessarily been an increase in gambling amongst younger people. Those who like to gamble, usually pick up the taste anyway. And since poker is a skill game imo it doesn't follow that an increase in gambling is to blame. The fact that casinos are fun places or that there are free drinks at machines has nothing to do with it. We are talking about the change specifically in poker. And that has to be to do with the image of poker and the way we play it.

Young people learn faster than old people. Also, I believe that people start playing poker younger and younger so they learn more and are more experienced. And maybe young people are more determined to win
i don't think it is the only reason. many people play regular homegames with friends, usually only for little money. when i play with friends there are usually only 2 or 3 players who play online. most of the others haven't even tried. i think tv-coverage is very important (thats how we got the idea to play poker) and the fact that there were already some successful younger players (like phil ivey). if i would have seen doyle brunson playing some other old guy, i probably would have never tried. the success of young players has to do a lot with online poker, because 1. they learn faster 2. they want to learn and WIN, while many old people just want to gamble and have fun. 3. you find many informations about strategy and mathematics in poker on the internet, young people have no problems to find and use these information
