How bad are the French at poker? - Honest opinions only, no ignorance!  0
I live in Western Canada and my exposure to French and Quebecois people is very limited and my exposure them as poker players was almost nil, until I started playing on Poker770 (Thanks to BRM)

In just 2 months I've managed the following, playing freerolls and the MTTs that I won tokens for:
Wins: 4
Seconds: 4
Thirds: 3
Finals (4th-10th): 4
Cashes (11th+): 4
15 Finals, 19 Cashes = $198.96 + 11 tokens

On TV I only recall ever seeing two players with any regularity: David Benyamine and Bertrand (Elke) Grospellier, and Elke is so loose you'd think he was playing a freeroll Tongue

Since playing on Poker770, I have had enourmous success, and have damn nearly worn out my keyboard making notes on all the stupid, moronic plays I've seen made on this site. 99% of them, by French or Quebecois players.

I understand that in France, the legal age for gambling happens to be 27, so possibly it could be explained that this limits their ability to learn how to play properly, but I really don't know.

If there are any BRM members out there who live in/near Quebec or in Europe and are regularly exposed to French players, would you please give me your honest opinion on what you've seen.

THIS IS JUST FOR HONEST OPINIONS AND FEEDBACK,
NOT FOR BASHING A PARTICULAR GROUP.
LEAVE YOUR IGNORANCE AT THE DOOR, PLEASE!!!

Most of them play very aggro. Like durrrr on steroids. So calling them down light will win a lot of pots against them.

In France they don't play poker, they gamble with cards.
They get 2 cards to bet, so many of them can't tell you the difference between Texas Hol'em and Blackjack. Any 2 can do it.

I've just moved to france from the UK but haven't yet played live poker with any french. I don't know where you got the legal age for gambling being 27. I'm pretty sure it's 18 but if not then I'm gonna be breaking the law a lot while I'm here. I don't see how any nationality can be naturally bad at poker. Maybe something to do with culture or media perception. But then the experts would be theoretically the same level in every country. If it is indeed the case though that french ppl are bad at poker maybe I can benefit from it this year while I'm at university here.

If it just an ace/rag problem, this thread wouldn't be here...

I'm talking about calling all in with a backdoor gutshot and one over card...or 4-way preflop all ins with J7os etc....I mean really psychotic crap

I played on everest poker a while back on their NL2 (they dont have these tables anymore Sad), NL10 and NL25 tables. Most of the people there are french and they are worse than the usual players you get on NL25 on stars or ftp.

By the way, its "Elky" not "Elke". I follow the starcraft progaming scene and Bertrand Grospellier used "Elky" when he was a starcraft pro in korea Tongue

French players are awful (not all). They play poker like it was bingo. No skills at all, just luck.

I blaim Napoleon

Napoleon Bonaparte: Napoleon was a French general who led a coup d'état against the French state in 1799 and became its leader. During the next 13 years, he racked up a series of military victories that made France the dominant power in Central Europe. However, in a prequel to the Hitler flick, he led his "Grande Armée" in an attack on Russia. He ran into the same dual problem of being out of position in a game that he was ill-equipped to play. Bonaparte did not lose all of his money, but he dropped so many chips with this blunder that his stack was greatly weakened, and he succumbed to his enemies a year later at the Battle of Leipzig. He spent two years in exile on the island of Elba, then took a rebuy and went at it again in a match against extremely strong opponents. At the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, he went broke for the second time, and spent the rest of his life in exile at St. Helena under British supervision.

Are you sure your talking about 770 and not the Cake network Question At Cake 94o is a monster and certainly well worth going all in pf with. They will even reraise a reraise with them, sometimes shoving in pf if they have too. As for the French, I have recently moved to the UK and haven't come accross many (if any) so I couldn't tell you much. But I have heared much about the country and it's people. Now that I have read this I am going to be looking for them. Thx

with exceptions the worst players ive met, no matter on which client.
americans tend to bluff, germans play tight, they eastern countrys also like to bluff (mostly in the wrong moments Big Smile ) the french......seem not even to have a strategy. they just pot or overpot as soon as they hit something on board - no matter if its the lowest pair. Ax seem to be the nuts for them and they reraise anyone with this holecards.
sometimes i think that has something to do with their pride like "what...you voulez vouz bluff moi?"...and keep callin till river lol. but then again......i dunno

I dont consider french players as bad as you described them at the possibilities, but they really seem to have some lack of experience when playing higher levels. I used to play with many french players at Full Tilt, due the schedule compatibility and, at low levels, one can still understand some bad move (trying to still blinds in wrong position and others...) but that is not acceptable at higher levels, like i also noticed.
But one should never tell it is something general, only after playing with them all... Big Smile kidding Big Smile

It must be that they all learn/or don't learn from the same poker schools/books/casinos ... because Every time there's a terrible donk at my table, a hover over their name reveals they are uindeed french. I don't know why, but they all seem to be terrible players/donks.

Having played on the Merge network a bit I can also say the Americans are just as bad.

If u play low limits , cheap buy-in , i think 70-80 % of players you will play against are fishes , if the room is mainly french , us etc ... , u will consider a whole country to be poker noobs nation but don't forget that in any country most of players are fishes.

And the minimum age to play money games in france is 18+, 16+ if you want to buy alcool and 21+ if you want to go to the sex shop , 27 is just 27 Blink
