virus - virus - virus !  0
i am a member at a other poker forum also and i believe that i am not the only one , but what happened to me past week was not that funny . i received a e-mail from admin at other forum and after i opened the mail my pc crashed completely , could do nothing no more , tried and tried for some days to fix it but nothing i did could help so yesterday i went to the shop buyed a new pc and asked to repair the old one . i have anti-virus at my pc from my provider and also kaspersky but even that did not protect me , so people be aware when you open a mail even when you think it's a safe mail from someone or some forum you know . at this point i can't tell the forum name because it's not allowed but if admin gives permition i will give forum name just in case of protection for mobmembers that maybe or member at this other forum also .

Sorry to hear you had problems. But I don't see the point of putting the name of the forum in here as it's not even 100% sure the e-mail was in fact sent from that forum (why would they?). It's the easiest thing to forge the sender name (and e-mail address) in an e-mail. It can be done in the settings in every e-mail client basically and spammers use it very often to send spam/virus because the recipient is more likely to open the mail if it comes from somebody they might know.

that sounds more like a accident that your pc crashed at same time as you openend the email.
there´s no virus that can kill your hardware. probably your network broke ?
does bios work ?

i don't know much about pc but this i know for sure , nothing is wrong with the network as my child has pc in his room upstairs and it's the same network and this work fine , i opened mail , got no problems , entered the forum opened this mail and then it was over , i was able to go online but that was all , i could not open a pokerroom , could not open my mailbox anymore , could not even enter pc system because i wanted to do a system recovery but nothing worked and in the shop they told me that it was a virus and they will take a look at it but they could not fix it same day , so as for me virus or not , my pc was and is dammaged and i am not pleased wth it , i wil give all the info about the person who has send me the e-mail but i will contact first the admin of the other forum to let him know what has happened to me but at this point i am a bit afraid to go to this forum because of what happened .

my bad...with network i meant the "power" u know. thought you cant even turn on your pc cos you said nothing is working.

reading email doesnt harm as far as i know as long you dont open .exe or download other files.
well if they say its a virus then it gotta be one...sorry to hear.

by the way....all these AV and FW is a joke as you see. ( nothing to do with your post/virus just my opinion - that prooves it one more time why i dont have it installed. just slow down and **** up your system but doesnt protect you at all if its a well written program)

Some viruses can damage computers but usually only the hard disk or bios and these can easily be repaired or replaced.

As your computer starts up but you cannot access some things on it, I'd say the hard disk is infected, not the bios. The bios being infected would prevent the computer starting up.

The only way they can fix your other computer is by doing a high level format of the hard disk and reinstalling the operating system.

Format the hard drive and reinstall is what i suggest. You can do it once in a while to your pc, that has served you ages, without getting infected aswell.

I don't think that is because the email....well I am sure it was not...did you open any attachment in the email.....

Because I don't think it is possible to send virus like that..........

i opened the e-mail went to the poker forum site , opened my mail box at the poker forum site , there was a private message sending me to another site and than it was over . i will give more details as soon as i have contacted again admin from the other site but i know already that admin or the forum has nothing to do with it because they will start investigation and will explain me what they have find out about this matter and how this could happend because it's not good advertising for them if such things can happen on their site .

I get such messages (privat messages) on some forums all the time, telling me that they have found virus on my computer and to go to a certain website - which is likely infect my computer... it's bogus and only trying to trick you!

I agree with T3ddyKGB. All anti virus software is bs. Norton security did nothing to stop my pc from turning into a piece of junk after two years. Every time I run a scan it came up with the same problem which I had no idea how to fix. If I told it to delete harmful files they would just block it. You have to be a pro computer programmer to get rid of these viruses once they get in your system. Fire walls are equally useless. They block the software you want to use, make your favourite sites no good to you, and annoy you with messages that you don't even understand but never stop you from downloading anything really harmful.
The whole thing smacks of one big con, cos you have to keep upgrading the software. How can you buy something that is considered useless within a month of purchase. Once your subscription expires the AV becomes an annoying pop up, one of the nuisances you want it to stop. Computers simply aren't made to last anyway, cos the manufactures want you to buy the next model in a few years. No AV no matter how expensive and "advanced" can stop a pc from dying a slow and painful death. I only hope my mac won't suffer the same fate.

I've been running Avast anti virus and don't have any problems. One other thing I do is have any and all E'mails sent to my blackberry instead of the computer since most viruses are sent by email.

This - it's very likely the email in question did NOT originate from this admin, most likely it just pretended too. Otherwise, if it had originated from admin, most likely the admin had recieved a breach which then copied itself and mailed itself to his email address book, this is also common.

Anyway, instead of buying a new computer, the CURE-ALL and I do mean CURE-ALL for viruses, trojans, worms, etc is to reformat and re-install windows (or Mac OS / Linux if you're retarded Big Smile ) but that will fix everything. pain in the arse and hopefully you've backed up anything personal that can't be loaded from a disc or downloaded from the internet. But very easy to do, just load your Operating System disc into cd drive, restart (ensuring that cd-drive is priority boot device, done in BIOS) and basically follow the prompts from there Smile
