I got bored so I decided to start a thread with random interesting things:
starting with this:
Alzheimer's eye test: Count every "F" in the following text:
FINISHED FILES ARE THE RE SULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTI FIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS...
HOW MANY ? ONLY THE AMOUNT YOU COUNT FIRST TIME COUNT
Anyone who counts all "F's" on the first go is a genius. Three is normal, four is quite rare.
------------ and you can actually read this:
and aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. That's pretty good. I got 3 F's the first time i read that as well but the second time i realised what i did wrong alright. The second thing is pretty cool as well but i already knew about it.
Here's something that worked on me but I showed it to my friends and it didn't work for alot of them but i'd like to see what people here got

I counted all the fs first time. I was expecting there to be more but there definitely isn't. Are we not saying how many there are btw in case ppl read on or are we actually thinking there are four lol.
Seen that first and last letter thing years ago but yeah it is pretty amazing. I expect those at BRM whose first language is not english though may not be able to read it quite so easy.
Nanaconda it worked for me too but I'm thinking it's a pretty common answer anyway. The maths bit is just a distraction, doesn't really change your thinking. If there was a family fortunes question I bet 80% of people would say that one first.

I got six and that doesn't make me a genius by any means. You told me to count the fs so I scanned for the F shape, I didn't really read the words. And since you'd asked me a seemingly simple question I knew there was about to be some sort of catch so I paid more attention instead of over-confidently flicking through the words for words I know have the letter F in them.
I'm quite paranoid and sceptic in my personality so when someone asks me something simple I'm automatically trying harder. If there had been more fs in the text I would probably have been more likely to miss the 'of's but it's really easy to spot them when there's only six there.

Whether a tomato is or isn't a vegetable is debatable but when I looked at the comments on youtube someone wrote 'apple'. It's quite important that the video specifies vegetable as it wouldn't work with fruit. I believe the reason this works is because it first leads you into a state where you're not thinking too hard. It clears your mind with the simple maths so that you don't over complicate your answer by trying to outthink it. Our first instinct is to say the first vegetable we knew as a child or the most simple word that fits. This probably varies between different cultures and countries but in the UK as a child you could probly name a lot more fruits than vegetables. Their colour and shape was used in our early development when learning in school. Vegetables with longer names were not so common although carrots being a relatively simple word beginning with C, famously orange, associated with rabbits would be common knowledge for most children. I am willing to bet that the most common three answers were carrot, tomato, potato in that order.
