The following principle is key to becoming a successful poker player. Without the proper money management skills, the best players in the world would go broke. For all you begigner-readers, here are the basic rules of bankroll management for Texas Hold'em.
20 buyins for NL Hold'em. 300 big blinds for Limit Hold'em. 40 buyins for SnG Tournaments.
What is bankroll management? "Bankroll management" (sometimes abbreviated to BRM) is where you play at certain limits to avoid losing all of your bankroll due to bad runs of cards, which any poker player must expect from time to time.
This is called "playing within your bankroll". Subsequently, if you play at higher limits where there is too great a chance of losing all of your poker money, you are "playing out of your bankroll".
Why is bankroll management important? The reason why you should choose your limits carefully in poker is due to the variance. Variance is a term used to describe the "ups and downs" of poker where you fluctuate from having bad runs of cards to good runs of cards, resulting in varying profits and losses.
If you play poker for long enough there are going to be periods of time where you will consistently lose money, not because you are playing badly, but because the cards are not falling your way. This means that if you do not have enough money in your bankroll to absorb these big downswings, it is likely that you will lose it all.
Every player, irrespective of ability, will experience variance in their game. Bankroll management is in place to deal with this variance and allow you to continue playing without going broke.
Therefore every time we sit down at the poker table, whether it be live or online, we want to give ourselves the best opportunity to win a maximum amount of profit whilst keeping the risk of going broke minimal. This is where the rules of bankroll management come into play.
So what limits should I be playing at? Cash games. If you are playing pot limit or no limit poker, the safe recommended size of your bankroll is 20 times the full buy-in of where you want to play. This means that if you want to have the best chance of making money at a $1/$2 game where the maximum buy-in is $200, you should have a bankroll of at least $4000.
Another way of applying bankroll management is by only putting a maximum 5% of your entire bankroll on the table at any one time, which works out the same as having 20 times the buy-in for the game.
If you like to play limit Holdem however, you should have 300 Big Bets as a minimum for the limit you wish to play at. Therefore to play $1/$2 limit Holdem, you should have a bankroll of at least $600.
Tournament games. It is recommended that you have a bankroll that will give you 40 buy-ins to the level of tournaments that you wish to play at. Therefore if you want to play at the $10+$1 Sit n Go's you should have a bankroll of $440.
The guidelines noted above are very general rules that should give you the best opportunity to make money from playing Texas Holdem poker without going broke. However there are going to be some exceptions and alterations depending on how and where you play.

Many of us who just want to use pokerbonus as a way to try to win free cash should follow this rules in order to achieve their objectives. If because of not doing this that we end up loosing the no deposit bonus without winning a single cent. If we try to do things as they ought to be, we will win something, little in the beginning but that will grow with time, the better we apply our knowledge to the game! This is how things must be done, there's no secret in the game: some are rich with poker because they followed all rules with no mistakes!

Very good article, all necessary in short and understandable form. Only brainer in real life is, that i cant stick to it, atleast so far. Now i lost my bankroll and i decided to not deposit this year and next year deposit same amount. Maybe this will help me get respect to my BR.

LOL, wow, im impressed 2 good posts in 1 day Bankroll Management without it even the Pros go broke. Im a bit tighter on the tourn games and use the 2% rule. And I think 20BIs min for DoNs PLO 30 BI FLO 300 BB

Nice, BRM is very important. Ive only started becoming more profitable once i started using strict BRM (moving up and down limits using strict rules) With BRM you also avoid monkey tilt... i.e. losing one hand worth $300 with a bankroll of $1K at a stake your not rolled for is waaaaay more painful than losing $300 when you have a $30K roll
Yes, it's indeed a priceless law for us... but I hope we'll have one for players who likes to play PLO as cash games as it's a completely different kind of BRM as variance is high there...

nice post for beginners. without bankroll management poker is luck and eventually one will bust if he continues to play as he wants without any attention to his bankroll. i think everyone should individualize no of buyins according to his style after some time , some might require more buyins than normal
I always heard for SnG 5%s. But once you hit MTT you should be at 1-2%.
The other thing i noticed is in your guidelines you only ever played deep stack poker. It may not work at higher levels but im a big fan of short stack poker, it allows me to play mostly top pair poker and any mistakes i may make on kicker or silly bluffs on my behalf don't hurt as much as they could.
Im pretty sure playing short stack poker you could sit at most of those limits for 40% what you had stated, but i guess if your using an arbitrary start point it may as well be a full buy in.

Very good advice here guys 'Bankroll Management' is the key when starting off at real cash tables. Although I already knew all this i still felll back in to the same routine and getting too greedy trying to earn cash too quickly ballsed it up lol but you can only learn by your mistakes,good luck at the tables everyone

Well oliver, I've already told you what happened if you read at post #7:
Anyway it's ok, it's kind of you to thank me, I just tried to help and get you started with your bankroll. But if you ask me, I think the real problem is why can't you start your bankroll from FREEROLLS, since you are not eligible to get any NDB. I started this way in 3 different poker rooms and multiplied it quite easily I'd say.
DON'T focus on FTP or Pokerstars freerolls with 10,000 entrants that pay the first places only... it's like a lottery there and too much waste of time! Instead focus on freerolls with fewer people. I know that PartyPoker has some VERY GOOD freerolls with fewer people divided by regions... maybe you're eligible to play there.
And then there are "Poker School" pages, like the ones from FTP (called Academy) and Pokerstars (called Intellipoker). Spend some time there, they give you tests to pass with prizes and entries to many freerolls or SnGs that they organize especially for people like you that want to get their bankroll started... You'll also learn very useful stuff there.
Improve your game and be sure that it's not difficult to get started... Good luck with it!
