The cereus network has stated that they have moved from XOR based encryption to SSL. They clearly thought that the public backlash they had recieved was worth doing something over.

The reason they would cheat you as opposed to just emptying your account is that it would be harder for the player cheated to know. If you wake up tomorrow and found all your poker accounts empty you would immediately complain to support. If you just lost a lot at the tables you might be pissed but in all likelihood you wouldn't complain.
