Computer wizz help needed (1K MobPoint Reward)  0
I have a DVD player that has a USB slot, it plays all sorts of files.
When I put films or music on a pen drive the files load and all is good, but when plugging in my external hard drive it says "no files recongnise" but does know my EHD is plugged in.
I have only tried avi and flv(mpeg), is it worth trying outhers?(RM,WMV,MOV etc)
Does anyone know of a way around this? are there any DVD player hacks? or software I can put on the EHD so my DVD player thinks its a pen drive etc?
Or will DVD players simply not except files on a EHD?
I have used google but no luck as yet, but im sure there is a way.
REWARD : 1K mob points to whoever can find a way to get the EHD files playing on the DVD player.

Some DVD-players don't accept EHD or USB-pens with large storing capacity. I've seen players that only accept external memory with less than 8GB. My Panasonic BD30 (Blu-ray player) accepts my 500GB EHD. Guess it depends on which player you've got...

Bigfoot, your pendrive has FAT32 file system and your EHD has NTFS. Are you sure that your DVD player supports NTFS?

Hmm, it's just a thought but do you have a password lock protection on your HD? Many brands of external disks have one and if you've activated it, your files won't be recognised by the DVD... it needs to be unlocked through a pc...

I think schmoyster is right. You need a FAT32 Filesystem on your harddisk.

Try Partition Manager or similar to change File System.

I think Schmoyster is wrong.

The easiest way to play media files from an EHD on your DVD players is to open the DVD drawer and shove the EHD in. If it seems a little tight, you might need to wiggle it about a bit, or maybe give it a few light taps with a large club-hammer. After that it should be just a case of pressing the play button on your DVD player. Simples.

Occasionally, the DVD player erroneously displays the "No Disc" message in which case just pour a small amount of petrol (must be unleaded) into the air vents and wait a few minutes. Before you do this, I also suggest you remove the ring-main fuse from your consumer unit and wedge a teaspoon between the terminals to ensure that you don't accidentally trip any breakers.

I think Jolenissen & schmoyster could both be onto something. FAT32 is certainly STILL the most widely compatible large capicity format. However, bare in mind you cannot have a file over 4GB on a FAT32 hard-drive.

And it is also true a lot of media devices (TV's, DVD players, media boxes) that accept USB connections will NOT function correctly if the capicity is too large.

I have a shitty device at home that plays media files and if we connect our 1TB external HDD it takes around 30minutes to read/index it and as such we stick to pen drives (which work instantly).

Try reformatting to FAT32 (obviously back-up your files first) and if that doesn't work it's probably a capacity issue.

Are all the media files in the root directory? Are there many files on the HDD that aren't media files?

Guess I should have said the file system is FAT32
No password @ ILI_002
@jessthehuman I have a lot of books on there (PDF) also a fair few HH, but the majority are media files, mainly music.
No they are not in root directory, but I have just tryd avi file in root with no luck.
Thanks for the feedback guys, starting to luck like its a no go, probably best getting some more pen drives.
@BoyElectric well it was worth a shoot, tingled a little, the play button is no longer attatched the the player, im pressing but nothing happens, I used a jack hammer perhaps thats were I went wrong.

Yes, in the past I've also found that the vibration from the jack-hammer causes some of the more "sensitive" components to become detached from reality, hence my suggestion of using a club-hammer.

If the play button is no longer attached, try shouting "PLAY" in Taiwanese. Most people don't know these players have voice-activated controls and, obviously, as they are all made in Taiwan they only respond to the local language. If this doesn't work, you probably have one of the cheapie players made elsewhere and it should simply be a case of locating the "made in . . ." sticker to identify which local lingo to shout at it in.

p.s The "Death to the Giant Panda Trust" were very grateful for your generous donation.

Shouting "PLAY" in Taiwanese is rather far fetched, they do not respond kindly to raised voices, so I gave gentle whispering and karaoke ago, however my pronunciation is bad, so have resorted to showing it pictures of "play" in Taiwanese, but these are from my Eastlight Colorado Box File, not sure if it can read such files.
I gave the remote a try, but after whispering play and showing it the pictures I realized it has no batteries, so have ordered a new one (see attached image), maybe that will get it to play.
This one best not come with a male adaptor.

p.s I have more Des O'Connor CDs if them guys still need donations.

always the external trouble with usb...
alot possibilities why it wont work. ever tried your eHD at a friends place ?
you could install a OS on your eHD and boot from it (if you have another partition, else it might ask to format if i remember?)...maybe at least taht works.

Thumbs Up

That's the answer. Create 2 partitions. Suggest axe, chainsaw, or C4.

Haha - you should post more BoyElectric

@B1gfoot - I think you need to use google - just google your brand/model of dvd players and search for forums where people have posted about similar issues, someone somewhere is bound to know the answer. I think most likely a capacity issue.. but maybe there's some other simple explanation.. but there's almost nothing you can't google for an answer.
