Ok. I'm about to say something controversial and you'll probably all hate me but please don't Thumbs Down me down cos I have a right to an opinion and I would like cinema fans to be able to read it. Ok here goes.

Avatar = worst popular film of the decade

Of all the films that achieved great success and were commercially well received Avatar was the most over-rated, horribly constructed and particularly important travesty for the cinema. I honestly believe that without the 3D and CGI technology this film would have been unredeemable. While I appreciate James Camerons talent for aesthetic production as we saw in Titanic, his attitude towards plot, acting and traditional cinematic technique are that they may as well count for nothing when you've got enough money to throw at a "blockbuster".

But my biggest problem with Avatar is not the lack of good acting, the poor attempt at showing a believable romantic relationship, it's not the fact that the story is so clearly ripped from a well-known disney film, it's not that it doesn't have a shred of originality about it. But my problem is that it seems to have a moral message, a meaningful message about spirituality and that message is DON'T KILL MAGICAL TREES FOR USEFUL MATERIALS THAT MAKE YOU RICH COS THATS EVIL. Seriously... wtf is unobtainium. Don't say this is a metaphor for iraq or war today cos if it is, that means all US soldiers deserve to die whilst every iraqi life is precious. Seriously watch the film again and tell me that the film doesn't paint things in black and white. How many humans die that we are not supposed to care about but every time a blue monkey dies it's so sad. I worry that this film makes you think that you've seen something deep and real cos it looks so... well, deep and real but really it's an empty film that makes people dull and submissive.

Sorry I had to get all this off my chest but I do my degree in this sort of stuff and when I read this thread it got me ranting all over again.

While i can agree with you in some things i disagree in most of what you say.

Avatar is not overrated, the movie hand ups factor was the whooooooooooooowwwwww in every person that watched it.

In the summer before the movie came out i readed an newspaper article talking about the movie, and i stayed quite surprised when all the jornalist was talking about the biggest project of all time. As a big fan of cinema that i am, i stayed quite perplexe, and i wanted to watch the movie, i had to do it, cause they where all talking about something never did before in the cinema. IN the 10 first min utes of the movie i was like woooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwww, man watch the movie in 3D, when i watched it, for me was the kind of surprises that i didnt had since the first Pirattes of Caribbiean.

The Pocahontas controversial came after, and you know what, for me its the same all the controversial about the rip off of pocahontas story. You know why??? Because 80% of the movies rip off of other storyes. Its getting harder and harder to make original sotries, if one formula gerts sucess, after it will apear 10 movies with different stories using the same formula. We see that alot in the romantic comedies and policial movies. We just need to have some fun and have good times when we watch the movie, that the purpose of going to the cinema. I dont regret any second of watching Avatar, because morew than the story, its the techonology and the capacity to make me interested to know how it going to end the movie.
I watched AVATAR 3 times, 1 in 3D another in tv and the last time i watched the the movie with all the cutt off scenes, the movie is imense, its big.
James Cameroon is far to be my favourite realizator, i prefer tim burton style, but i had to give him credit of this master piece. Its far to be my favourite movie, but i loved the experience.

Please add two options in your poll :
-Other
-Haven't seen any 3D movie yet

Because yet, i cant answer :/ But actually, its not so bad, because the only 3D movie i saw was crap. Makes me think you should also add another option :
-If you cant make it good, make it 3D Blink

Your right, but i cant now.

The poll just have 10 slots and i tryed to fill in with the many movies possible, and now i cant change anything, but i appreciate your question and i hope you can talk about your favourite ones, no need to be in 3D of course.

@ kinogomes You wouldn't be the first person to disagree with me. I've argued and annoyed many friends with my opinion about Avatar. Of course I respect that some people think it's a good film.

I'm not a big fan of Cameron as I think he's limited as a director (we say director in english rather than realisateur). I thought there were some spectacular scenes in titanic with the boat sinking and you could see the whole ship but for me there are more important things than special effects. I don't even think that Cameron gets the most out of the 3D technology and Avatar had much more potential.

I tend to think that you can't make a film good simply by putting it in 3D and as technology improves we must still remember the old ways of making film. If you ever watch the silent b/w films of Buster Keaton you'll know that modern technology is not needed to create an amazing film and many films prove that you don't need an enormous budget either.

Still I'm not completely skeptical about 3D. I think that old cinematic styles and new technology can work side by side even in the same film. I have to confess I have not seen many 3D films as they are still too expensive and not worth paying the difference in many films imo, especially cartoons. But I would like to have seen Piranha 3D. I've seen clips and the film already seems to make good use of 3D. I saw Kelly Brook and the other girl swimming with their legs kicking out towards the camera. Imagine how hot that must look. Also Piranhas coming right at you. The nature of 3D is so suited to horror films. Compare that with Cameron who gives us leaves falling on us and a couple of fight scenes.

I already told that James Cameroon is far to be my favourite director. I prefer Tim burton ambientance and art style.
I like the 3D Cinema cause it made me go back to the cinema, i have been long time without going cause there was nothnig new, nothnig to atract me to go, and the 3D cinema had the facotr wow that i was needing.

If the 3D cinema is the future?? I cant answer to that question, in my opinion for now is step ahed to get people still atracted to go to the cinemas. I watched some movied in 3D.
My favourite in 3D in Alice in Wonderland, but i answered Avat6ar because i think Avatar shows the real purpose of the 3D, and in other side Alice have a light smell of 3D.
I think the 3D is more suitable for horror movies as you said and for adventure and animation too. For what i have seen in the cinema iam happy.

Sorry but when you said 'James Cameron is far to be my favourite director' I read it as 'James Cameron is by far my favourite director' which I thought was a little strange. Just the way the language is translated. I am also a fan of Tim Burton who is one of my favourite directors even if he hasn't made my favourite films. I love that you can spot his film in the first five minutes.

About 3D drawing people back to the cinema I agree is a good thing, although I blame the cinemas for driving everyone away in the first place. It's still too expensive and whilst I'm sure it costs a lot of money to show these films, how can they not make money with the ticket price, the extortionate popcorn and drinks prices and the advertising fees. Greedy buggers are responsible for their own demise.

I dont know how it works in the UK but in Portuguese the first week all the money that its made by a movie in a cinema goes to the company that produces the movies, the second weeks is 75% for the compnay and 25 for the cinema, thew third week is fifty fifty. The popcorns and drinks its an extra for the cinemas.
I think that the prices are pornografics, way too expensive, now we pay almost around 8€ to watch a 3D movie (most of them with really crap quality and story). I go to the cinema when i know its a great movie, but i dont blame the people that rips the movies to torrents. i think when we pay the movie in the cinema we are already giving great profit to the companies, all that they make in dvds and tvs (after 1 years) its too much money. I admit that i download some movies in torrent too, cause i know i put lotas of money in theyr pockets when i go to the cinema.
The 3D good thing is that made people like me go back to the cinema, and watch the movie in a new experience, something that we still doesnt have when we rip a movie from internet.

Whats your favorutie Tim Burton movie?? I have 3 that completely fascinates me, Legend of Sleppy hollow, Edward Scissor Hands and the first Batman.

8 euros is quite cheap for the cinemas I go to. My local multiplex charges £7 (8 and a half euros) for a normal film and £9.50 for 3D film with glasses hire. And they've stopped offering discounts to students so they have lost my custom completely.

My favourite Tim Burton is probably the first Batman film although sleepy hollow was also good. I think I really remember him though for his horrifying gothic children's films. I loved nightmare before christmas and beetlejuice terrified me as a child. I actually hated his rendition of charlie and the chocolate factory but only cos I loved the original and the book but I still appreciate the style of the film, I admire him for putting his stamp on the classic, and ironically I think that roald dahl would have loved it since he was quite a dark writer for a children's author.

I think Tron Legacy is a good oportunity to go to the cinema watch a good movie in 3D.
