i talked to a guy one night at a summer party, a few yrs back. the conversation soon changed to poker. as we talked, this gentalmen told me about his vegas games. after he got to brag a little,hahaha, i asked him if he had a tip for a fellow non-tourney player, who wanted to start....... he said "patience. fold fold fold"
i took this advice and use it in every game!!!!!!!! both live and online...and i am a final table hitter.. & it is because of this..... i do not chase cards..... rarely does a flush hit for me anyways!!! hahahaha. same for str8's!! unless i flop them... i aint bettin my stack on it. often i see that 2 of my cards landed. maybe on flop..maybe by turn. the pots are huge by now..... and then nothing after.......... so i keep my chips.. my chips!! hahahaha
see the point to playing tounaments, isnt to have the biggest stack... sure it helps, but the goal.... is to HIT THE MONEY$$$$$$$$$$...... man i have hit the money w/ 400 in chips..everyone else 24-60k..... haha. but i placed. i got paid...thats the point.... i had a gent. argue this point. saying that the point is to take first and thats it!! hahaha as much as i agree with this, i do a 3-step system. 1) Place in the money. 2) Hit final-T. 3) Take first.
i love these guys that get a huge stack, and think they cant lose!! next thing, they lose 3 small pots, get mad, and make bad calls.... i have folded hands that i regret....yes...regret badly!!! yeah i hit hands i folded, hit monster hands!!!!! full houses and str8s... but i wont play crap cards...8-2...9-3..6-10..ect. i remain calm and in the end... i dont fall out to flush or str8 draw.....or even higher pockets that dont hit & lose to 2 pair!!!! hahaha. see, i always tell myself.....
there will alway be another hand.....another set of cards...
why chase that hand, when the winning one could be next????????????????????????????

although i have played live for nearly17yrs,i have only started playing online, within the last yr or so. hahah i spent half my time playing the advertised freerolls, like half a million other ppl.haha. it wasnt untill about 6 months ago that i started to find private freerolls, forums,and all this. i never deposited and have built up a small br from that. i only recently started playing MTT standing games, and so my stats are sad to say the least. i had them posted to me once in a blog about bad beats..hahahha very embarrassing!!! but if you would like to add me to a graph, i would love to be able to see how i am improving...or not improving..hahaha. is there a place i can veiw...."ur MTT graph." ?

I hope we can see the graph because actually iam curious to see how is it going too.
sure you have to look after your chips in the early parts of a tourney , gaurd them well only play premium hands , but the successes I have had in tourneys have all came with aggressive play in the later stages , I have on occasion been shortstacked and closed shop in order to insure cashing but if I pass the bubble with a half decent stack its all hands to the guns , I dont mean go crazy just play more aggressive with the hands you do play

well this can be good strategy,but everything is in person,how player like to play,to be aggressive or to play slow and play like you,want to steal blinds!but your post is very good

You keep saying ABC poker. what do youmean, it's a very general term.

I will probably be corrected but I will answer this, what I see as ABC poker is playing by the book, usually TAG playing only premium hands in the early stages , taking account of position when playing any hand , early, middle or late, later in the tournament as with STGs a wider range of starting hand will be consdered perhaps played more aggressively depending on the blind size and obviously your table position , when or if you pass the bubble strategy then depends on the player, stack size , do you ladder up or try to win by being LAG, hyper TAG , Doom I think will try to win, this is but a brief account of tournament stratgy the variables are endless, an ABC description perhaps?

I play tight early on, maybe calling with some high suited connectors if its cheap enough to see the flop, other than that I just play top cards. If I can get a good stack of chips, I like to be agressive towards shorter stacks, if I start getting low I will always try and have a gamble if I feel the odds are a little in my favour, I used to make the mistake of just holding on to get into the money, but I found that everytime I did I would almost always be short stacked, so now I go for the win! seems to work better for me, I cashed £90 2 days ago from a £3.30 buyin placing 1st out of 147! was pleased with that

I tend to play a little loose during the first rounds, looking to get cheap flops with suited connectors/one-gappers/mid to low pocket pairs, hit well and stack up. If I don’t hit and my stack is starting to go down, I’ll tighten up a little. As play progresses, a large stack will let me continue to look for cheap opportunities to hit big hands, while the smaller the stack the tighter I become, looking to hit a monster and double-up, or go down in flames....

Everyone is right! I play very loose when the blinds are low because most people play tight early, with the exception of the first 5 hands. Then I tighten up as the tourny moves on finally when I get a hand, hopefully someone noted that I am fast and loose I will get a caller. This strategy works well for cashing in events. But to win a tournament you have to be great at every aspect of poker. Full table, short handed and heads up. Good luck all
