I'm pretty disturbed by how many people supporting OP - extreme violence is NOT an appropriate response to this behavior.
In most instances, even if they were trying to break into your house - most likely they are homeless or drug addicted and desperately trying to support themselves - most like a product of family violence/abuse themselves. The last thing people like this needs is an agressive psychopath beating them "to a pulp". Fucking shame man.

Well said as well Jess! This post is becoming a typical example of how very sad our society has become when I see so much support for this kind of extremely agressive and psychopatic behaviour. Very scary as well. I´ll be next for the , but that is very typical as well for this kind of mentality, if you can call it that. I would say "shame on you", but unfortunately I also realise that this is an emotion you can not feel. Very very sad....
You kind of people are the very reason I now live where I do. Really. I leave my door unlocked at night and when it gets too warm even OPEN. No worries. And if you are surprised such places still exist, well I promise you they do.
I used to live in Brussels where you couldn´t walk the streets at night without meeting a bunch of agressive sickos, and if you where to do that here, you would end up in jail a hell of a lot longer than 6 months, believe me. Unfortunately that wouldn´t help, only long-term therapy might stand a chance.

I do agree with some of you that maybe thats to much. But you dont know where he live. If someone came to my door to me and my girlfriends kids with a screwdriver, i dont think i would talk to him first either. I would talk to him after, im not a violent guy and you dont have to be that to protect your family. Im just saying, why take the chance if the guy have a screwdriver in his hand? Anyway, i do understand if you get some jailtime for "overeacting". Breaking his legs is going to far. As you said, he probally live next door, so your first punch probally made him back off and wonder whats going on.
