IslandJack,
You are a well full of poker knowledge. Your experience really show's through in your detailed, no nonsense post's. Love them. I have played a similair style, though maybe not as tight, maybe I'll create a thread detailing it. Lately I've been taking way too many risks early on. Playing small pairs and hands I wouldn't normaly play.Losing too many races. Have to keep telling myself even though it's the best hand, 4% isn't worth going out of the tourney and giving up your shot to go deep and make the money. I have a ticket to the 1000$ this sunday, I think I'm going to try this strategy this Sunday. This is a great post! Cool

You nailed it. Took the words right out of my mouth. You want to land on the leaderboard, follow these rules.

yup..been following these rules...slowly creeping up on the leader board at party...

although sometimes, you just can't escape those landmines.people with junk hands going all in.hitting their one card flush with a 4 or a 7!!!!!! Aww crap!

anyway, goodluck all Smile

I know I previously replied to this, but it's the advice that I stick to on my day off work (Saturday). Can't say how important some of Island's information is. I don't always abide 100%, but when I do, I do place better and make a little $$. Strong points I support the most is: Late start (when possible), patience waiting for good hands and limp in especially preflop. Got to tell all Mobsters! I printed this out when it was first posted to discipline myself to be patient. Good Luck and Good Day!

That is a very nice compliment. Thanks.
I really appreciate it! Blink

I must honestly say I tried to play some of those in the last week, and I just couldn´t follow my own advice. I just don´t have the patience anymore in those games.
Played one on Party that way and was 20th out of 50 before going all-in with AA, and STILL getting busted by 2 callers with 60.000 stacks and holding garbage. These freerolls seem to have gotten worse, and the crazies don´t let up anymore where they used to calm down from 80th on down.

Anyway, I played that way during the first week of freerols on FT last month, and made 3 final tables that way, so good luck to all who have the patience to play that tight and not let up.

Some Tips for the Freerolls on FT ? yeah... you might just play the same bingo than anyone else at the beginning because otherwise you have almost no choice?!

I agree with you on nearly every point there, the only thing i do differently is limp in with small pocket pairs and see if i can double up through trips but apart from that i tend to fold every hand apart from suited connectors or big pairs. These tournaments always have absolute divs in them who couldn't care less what hand they have in what position they will shove and often win with a crap hand like A 2 or K7 Aww crap!

I agree almost entirely with u Jack, exept for the fact i would sometimes try
to make use of all the donkmoves with smaller hands if u can get in an all-inn
with only 1 of those donks. With more donks in de hand its all in de hand of the
poker-gods Cool

I've told so many players in the MOB freerolls.....you have to learn more than 'how to click'. Doesn't matter what they have....2-7, 9-3, K4, 82....just doesn't matter. If they can work their index finger over the mouse, they are going to raise or go all in and usually pre-flop.

Husband offered to trade monitors with me, since mine is the old 'glass' front, and his is 'punchable' Aww crap! Aww crap!

I thought that the players coming into the MOB games would be good to play against....some honestly real competition. Not the case. While these players COULD play good poker and maybe win a little something for their account, they continue to DONK because, HEY! ITS ONLY A FREEROLL! If these players would actually play instead of just clicking to click, it would be a great way to improve your game. There actually are some very good players, but they, too, are most times DONKED. Waste of a chance to learn more good skills for the game.

Great tips for playing a freeroll.
I tried it similar way several times, but not that tight.
My problem is really to be patient enough and wait, wait, wait....

but mostly they wont cash anyway and give their chips away sooner or later. even it´s frustrating loosing against them at least they won´t make it deep!

As Almonds said yes.. I agree life is to short that you would play freeroll for 5h and win 1-2$ .. :} it sucks .. First of all to take 1st place on freeroll is posibility of 0.1% :} because there is a lot of lucky fishes..

I Guess there`s also some strategy into this kind of play. I mean there are so many freerolls (I`m talking about Fulltilt particularly) that a player maybe thinks... It`s not worth playing this freeroll to the end unless I double up a few times in the first 10 minutes. if it doesn`t succeed he goes to the next freeroll and so on. If he doubles up 2-3 times in the first 10-20 minutes he will start playing better.

I saw this happen a few times. Player at my table goes all in with 6 7 suited against 3 players. He catches his flush. Then was all fold/fold/fold until he god good starting hands. So he was a donk for 1 hand only then he played some good poker IMO.

Of course not all players play like that. And will go all in every time they "feel" they`ll win.

And it`s not only EE players that do that. US players do it too, UK players do it too, players from nordic countries do it too. So let`s not generalize.

Good luck at the tables.

well, if you finish the leaderboards with a good place it is possible not to win only few cash.

I mean:
You win two freerolls in 1 Month ~ 45$
You win the leaderboard ~ 200$
You cash at the freeroll at the end of the leaderboard ~ dunno, maybe 65$?

so one person will make about 300$ without risking any money. of course he needs some luck, but that´s poker Blink And 300 $ are more than only few money to me!

Absolutely right!
I read through my post again and that´s what I meant when i posted this:

"4. Only play late position if possible.
The button or the cuttoff.
They have ALL read about "stealing", and think that a button raise commands respect. Idiots, like I said."

Should have added:
"If you are on the button or cutoff with a small pair or suited connectors and you can limp in, go for it, hope the button doesn´t raise if you´re on the cutoff. and see what hits on the flop. These are the only real chances you will get."

Thought I did write that, but apparently not.
(it was a long post... Smile )

Thanks for pointing that out.

Don´t know if you have played these particular freerolls, but the problem with that is that you never know what they are holding. These idiots will make a 15xBB raise with AA or 10-3 if they are suited. Most of these freerolls run at 2.600-3.600 players, and to make it through the total lack of logic and impossibility of putting any of them on a "range" (because they don´t have one), makes that you will quickly step away from this tactic because you don´t know how many times you can attempt it before getting busted, unless you want to play 4 of them every day. If you have a decent stack facing small stacks, for sure, it´s an option and go for it. But playing the way I suggest will mostly keep you short-stacked most of the game. The big wins are easier to be had when everyone is holding 10-30 times their starting stack.
It´s decent play what you suggest, and isolating the Donkey is perfect Poker play, but there are just too many of them, and because of that you will often be tempted to do it, until your luck runs out. And then you have to sign up for another one and sit through the whole garbage play thing again for hours, just to get some points on the Leaderboard. Blink
