Is Poker a sport?

Not an overly great question today, your thoughts on this...

Yeah first one !!!
In my opinion it is a kind of sport similar to chess.
This is also called sport and not only games where a ball is in play...

Definitely a sport, it's a mental / strategic sport. Can become physical if you don't control yourself if you know what I mean. Throwing things, and stomping when your losing and dancing / prancing when your winning. lol No, but the first comment is true. Good Luck at the tables and have enjoyed your daily questions. Anyone who has played in a ring game for 36-48 hours straight will tell you exactly how physical poker can become. Endurance endurance endurance. Thumbs Up yes it sure is a sport

I do believe we are all just a little biased for this question, I think maybe Dozn would vote no just to be different. Big Smile

Since dozn hasn´t seen this yet, I´ll be the one:

NO ! Big Smile

But I also believe Chess is not a sport. Blink
I like Chess, but a sport...no.
Same as Poker. You sit down and play.

For me a sport is something wher you "move", do something physically active.
To each his own... Blink

Poker is sport when you are playing in tournaments and trying to bust others(or taking part in leaderboards) and poker is not a sport when you are playing at the casino for money :}
BTW internet poker is not a sport for 100% Big Smile

My first instinct was no. Things like chess, computer games and card games are not sports. I wasn't even sure about snooker and darts, which appear on TV as sports. But wikipedia says they all are:

A sport is an organized, competitive, entertaining, and skillful activity requiring commitment, strategy, and fair play, in which a winner can be defined by objective means. It is governed by a set of rules or customs. Activities such as card games and board games, are classified as "mind sports" and some are recognized as Olympic sports, requiring primarily mental skills and mental physical involvement.

Obviously wikipedia is not definitive but it's a good definition. Still some dictionary definitions I've read specify two distinctions. Sports - a word for physical games and sports - a general word for all games. So I guess it's open to interpretation.

I know I went a bit geeky and did some research before replying. I have to admit I'm always looking things up and wikipedia is my first go to. Don't know what I'd do without it lol.

Of course yes; strange sport because skills required are different but amazing sport Blink

Since we´re going all geeky... Big Smile

Webster´s:
a : a source of diversion : recreation
+ a bunch of other definitions.

So I guess I´m wrong.
Poker seems to be a sport... Worship

If all games are sports, then Poker is a sport. If not, i guess it isnt. I dont consider it like one, and my government either. If so, those playrs who are sponsored should have the same benefits as federate players from other sports. And here is a problem. Where is World Poker Federation? Is there any, or something that acts like one? I dont know it. There should be a Federation so that pro players, and those who want to play poker for living, could register at, and have an identity behind which fights for their rights. It would be nice to have a Portuguese Poker Federation. I think i would go there to try and fill in the minimum requirements to be a federate poker player!

I think it is because there'll be poker events at the next Olympic Games ( London 2012 ) Cool

Poker is sport! If chess is sport, If bowing is sport, If billiard is sport...then POKER IS SPORT!!
What is football then a game? Strategy big part of football like it is in poker, and luck is big part of football like it is big part of poker. There are some sports that you play with legs, some you play with hands and some that you play with brain...

------------
And why we can watch poker on sport channels on TV?

If chess qualifies, why poker wouldn't? And whatta great sport! U don't even have to run hahaha Smile)
