To me, a donkey is someone who does a really bad play in poker. One where its obvious that its a bad play.
One time, it was 3 handed. Only 2 get paid. Button raising with anything all the time. Button raises, I pick up 99 in small blind and go all in. Big blind calls for all his chips with queen jack off suit for like 6000 when there was a raise than a reraise..I called him a donkey and a few other names as well lol.

Basically to me a donkey is a person who overbets constantly. Sometimes on purpose or sometimes because the person really believes he or she has a great hand, when in fact it´s not all that. Many times, donkeys will overbet to simply make people fold the hand.

Fodz you are partially right. Over betting can considered a tactic. It 'all depends on position chip stack size etc. If i'm chip leader and SB and your BB and short stacked, everyone else has folded then i'm going to apply pressure on you. In short, i'm going to force you to commit a large chunk of your stack to see the flop. Over betting to force everyone else to fold is not always an act of a "Donkey" . The trick is knowing how, when and to whom to do it to. It's known as a "Bluff" and can be considered a skill. The definition of a "Donkey or "Fish" is someone who does'nt understand odds, values, outs etc... Someone who plays with hope rather than applied logic .

Rush, I agree those can be used as tactics too, what I meant to say is exactly what you have stated, someone who does it without thinking about odds, position, etc..

everybody has there own opinions on what a donkey is, i think its a player who doesnt understand the game and plays beyond his skill level. For instance calling with A5 out of position to a big pf raise when its obvious your behind to me thats a DONK!! lol ( speaking from experience on that hand )

Donkey,
1) Plays to many hands 2) Over bets to much 3) calls allin with crap cards 4) Plays out of their limits 5) complains after a bad beat ( meaning Yelling and cabitzing) 6) Wins a 2 outter on the river ( Sometimes I can also be that kind of donkey)

I think a donkey is one who will call when he knows he is definately an under dog even though they always seem to suck out . Also they are in about every hand. I usually only see between 25%-35% of flops. Alot of people are hitting 60-75%.
